Minneapolis fire chief put on paid leave

The Minneapolis fire chief was put on paid leave Wednesday.

Fire Chief Bonnie Bleskachek was sued last week by a female fire captain, who's also a former domestic partner of Bleskachek's.

The captain accused Bleskachek of interfering with her career.

A city spokeswoman said the paid leave is standard procedure for Fire Department employees who are the subject of human resources investigations.

Bleskachek will remain on paid leave pending the outcome of the internal investigation. An outside firm has been retained to conduct the investigation.

Bleskachek is believed to be one of the only openly gay fire chiefs in the nation, and is the first woman to lead a professional fire department in Minnesota.

Thats an interesting observation shared by a lot of guys in government here. "Backseat Bonnie" (as the local conservative radio calls her) has only been on the fire dept 15 years. There's a lot more experienced men who were passed over by Minneapolis's uber-liberal mayor for her.

As a career firefighter, I am shocked, shocked I tell you, that politics would trump skill, talent, and experience. I just refuse to believe they wouldn't pick the best man (ahem *clearing throat*), for the job.
