It is good plinking ammo, but you won't win any matches with it. For just general range shooting it is good stuff. For competitions I'd buy something better
| So that stuff won't hurt a precision rifle in any way?
I'm not worried about winning matches, I just want to hit paper! Once I get decent sized groups I'll buy the $1/rd stuff or start reloading.

You probably know that 5.56 military is technically a little different than .223 and that it’s dangerous to shoot 5.56 in a rifle chambered for .223.
The same thing is true of 7.62 NATO and .308 except in reverse. The specs for .308 allow for significantly higher pressures than are allowed in 7.62 NATO. I believe that there are some minor differences in the specs for the cases, but I read somewhere that all 7.62 NATO ammo ever made also fell into the range allowed by the .308 case standards.
It would be dangerous to shoot .308 in a rifle chambered for 7.62 but going the other way shouldn’t be any problem at all.
I understand that match chambers can be a little tighter than standard chambers though. I wouldn’t think it would be a problem but it could be. If the round doesn’t go in the chamber easily then don’t shoot it. You could probably sell the ammo for what you paid for it if it won’t work so it’s not a huge risk.
