Diversity lacking in crowds at large museums

March 16, 2006

It's not surprising but nevertheless troubling for Chicago's museums and other cultural institutions: Their patrons are more likely to be white, educated and affluent.
{Oh yeah, I guess that's just really horrible... rich white folks }

"Chicago's large arts organizations are not successfully engaging households with poor socioeconomic backgrounds,'' University of Chicago researchers conclude in a new study. "Areas with high concentrations of African Americans and Latinos have among the lowest participation rates.''

Examining city neighborhoods and suburbs, the researchers found white areas with lower education levels and earnings also were disengaged.
{Wow, that's just SOOO unexpected - dumb poor people don't attend museums as much as rich smart people. Gee, that IS a shock. }
.
.
.
Researchers analyzed data from a dozen of Chicago's biggest cultural attractions, including the Art Institute, the Field Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago.
.
.
.
Number not engaged 'shocking'

At the Museum of Science and Industry, officials already have a name for the phenomenon -- "the Glenview effect,'' after the largely white suburb that represents its highest single ZIP code attendance, said Valerie Waller, the museum's vice president of marketing.

"We see it on the floor -- our audience is not as diverse as what we see in the city of Chicago or the surrounding area,'' said Waller.

Speaking Wednesday at the Cultural Center, where the study was unveiled, Waller said, "The number of people not engaged in our institutions, with all the variety of programming and opportunities we have for them, is shocking.''

Waller wondered if minorities and the poor aren't aware of the institutions or not interested. "Is price a factor? Many of our institutions were free 15 years ago,'' she said. "Is it the hours we're open? [Are people] overscheduled with soccer practices and everything else?''

Prediction: Chicago Museums will begin showing a LOT more "diverse" exhibits from Africana, Aztlan and other third-world shithole "cultures" to bring in more poor, uneducated lowlifes into the museums.

Too busy sitting on the sofa, watching Oprah, chugging a 40 oz malt liquor and waiting for a welfare check.

And if they succeed, that will drive out the rich white people. Next thing you know, the museums will be hitting the .gov up for more money so they don't have to close.

Friggin genius.

{yawn}

I'm educated, white, and middle class by my own sweat equity. I rarely go to museums either.

That 'diversity' problem could be cured by handing out welfare checks by the exit doors of the museum. You'd get tons of 'diversity' then.

Are they going to start affirmative action and deny whites entrance to the museums so they can get their percentages up?

I guess I shouldn't have gone to the Art Institute the last few times I visited Chicago. Shame on me for admiring that art.
Link Posted: 3/17/2006 8:13:26 AM EDT
Did they ever think that the reason the poor people didn't wanna go to the museum was because admission prices and gas prices might also have an effect. That's money they could use for 40oz. beers and cig's, plus drug habits have gone up over the years and also due to the price increase of stolen Glock FO-TAY's going up they have no loot money left after they cash the welfare checks.

I would like to see the museums do an exhibit on African FGM of 10-14 year old girls with pictorials and models.

Sorry, just be facetious, but to torture children is criminal.

No shiy! My first thought was to pro-rate the admission fee by how much one makes. A kind of sliding fee rate.

Reminds me of the story about not enough African Americans camping. When asked, they said, they preferred living in houses instead of roughing it.

Some cultures and people are just into different things.
I don't go to many museums either, and I would even be called a rich, white, guy.

"Our audience is not as diverse as what we see in the city of Chicago..."

Uh, excuse me, but I work in a major city. The population of the city I work in is extraordinary in its LACK of diversity; it's mostly black and mostly poor.
I guess that demographic is the current standard for what passes for diversity these days.

Museums are having problems with attendance these days, it's true. The growing indigent populations of the cities in which they are located do not attend them. And more affluent people in the suburbs have more entertainment options available to them which disuades them from braving the hassle of driving into center city and putting up with all the trouble of parking, expensive restaurants, fear of crime, etc.

Link Posted: 3/17/2006 8:38:55 AM EDT
WTF? The museum patrons are rich white people? You don't say.

They don't realize that normal people just aren't interested in their Feel good artsy liberal tripe, were too buisy making a living (thats working for you liberal types) and trying to raise kids to waste time on their socialistic propaganda. They can knock down all the project buildings, displace all the section 8 poeple to the suburbs, spend the general fund on flower pots (State street,Michigan ave.),construct a rediculous park that nobody wanted, destroy a perfectly good airfield in the middle of the night, and make Soldier field look like a flying saucer. Chicago is nothing more than a mecca for liberal socialists who couldn't care less about families or the middle class in general, Illinois had better wake up and isolate itself from the city and cook county. I would also like to add that it wasn't cook county alone that elected Rod Blajoyevich, it was down state that gave him the numbers to win, well I hope you have seen the light. If you want chicago politics to invade all of Illinois go ahead and vote Rod in again. You have seen that Blago and king richard are one in the same, and if you union guys keep voting democrat blindly you will get the government you deserve.Go ahead and bring up george ryan, I say he wasn't a republican at all in truth, more like an old time machine democrat, I hope he rots in prison for the rest of his miserable life.

The entrance requirements for museums must be discriminatory!

I smell lawsuit material here. Where's the ACLU when you need them.

That IS diversity. To most of these rocket surgeons, once the white man is gone, 100% diversity will be achieved. Then they can wallow in their own filth.

Different cultures value different things. Kentucky is trying to figure out how to get a more diverse group of people to use the camping facilities at the state parks. However, when they interviewed other groups than whites very few had any desire at all to go camping regardless of any reason or improvements made.

As for museams, Detroit as city that is 75% to 80% black, creating an African American History museam a couple years ago. Now you would think if any museum that was going to pull in a diverse crowd would take off it would be this one. Not so, every year the museum has had to beg for money just to stay open because no one visits the museam.

People are the way they are and throwing money at the situation isn't going to change the nature of people.
Link Posted: 3/17/2006 8:58:30 AM EDT

so, in other words, we have to force change because a certain segment of the population couldn't care less about education, culture (unless it's only about their own), and history (again, unless it's only about their own)?

nice.

Exactly - because the undeducated dumb people STILL won't come to the museums.

As an aside, if you are an "educator" they let you in FREE at the Field Museum in Chicago. w00t - even though I'm primarily a researcher, the couple of classes a year I teach saved me about $12 !

Upper, middle, and lower 'class' are all tenets of the socialist propaganda you're railing against. I agree with what you say and the points you make, but don't fall into their trap of believing in class.

You're missing the point. Other cities, like DC, have a wide variety of people, rich and poor, white, black, Asian, and Hispanic, visiting the museums and cultural events. I believe that the museums reach out to everyone so they have a more diverse audience. It's not a snobby affair when you walk into a museum there.

The Chicago-area public schools should make an effort to take school children to visit the various art and science museums for free.

People who are poor and uneducated are not lowlifes. You have got to be one of the snobbiest people on this board.

The FIELD MUSEUM is "feel good artsy liberal tripe"? Dinosaurs and man-eating lions are liberals now?

The MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY is "feel good artsy liberal tripe"? Coal mines and jet airplanes are liberal tripe?

The SHEDD AQUARIUM is "feel good artsy liberal tripe"? The baluga whales are artsy, or are they liberals?

The ART INSTITUTE is "feel good artsy liberal tripe?" - okay, I'll give you the "artsy" on that one, but I fail to see how Monet or Breton are "liberal tripe." Great art is great art, whether you're blue collar or white collar.

I really don't get your point, other than some kind of reverse snobbery, where you think somehow the "working man" is too good for art and culture.

Talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy. This is how the country had ended up with Springer, Maury Povich and Sex in the City.

Those Belugas are certainly liberal.

A: They don't work for a living.
B: They exist on the handouts of those that do.
C: They were politically indoctrinated via the socialist "Save the Whales" activity of the late 60s and 70s.
D: Each Beluga is a registered Democrat and has voted in Chicago's last mayoral election. Several times each, in fact. Don't believe me? Check the roles- "Flipper" isn't a ghetto moniker!

My point is I don't give a rats hindquarters about thoes places, they exist to do what? sure they were fun to go to when I was a kid, but then I liked the sreies MASH when i was a kid too, and then I grew up and realized it was all hollywood liberal propaganda. If you like to go to the museum, art institute, shed aquarium, thats good for you. I would rather spend my time and money on things that interest me. I generally think people should enjoy what they like, but the people who support thoes institutions would ban my sport (high power competition) so just why should I support them?

No, he is not. The "diversity" you mention in DC is very similar to that in Chicago. The only difference is the standard by which it is being measured. Every time I have been to the museums in Chicago OR "The Distrit," it has always been about 90% white with expendable income - pretty much the same demographic of tourists to DC, NOT residents of DC.

Have you been to these specific insitutions? Every school day you see crowds of school kids there! Are you just making wild ass assumptions?

You see that other 10% of foreign tourists and locals and call it diversity, Chicago sees it and calls it not enough diversity.

On another note, I get a kick out of the anti-intellectual, anti-arts crowd here at arfcom. Without knowing it, you face the same "cultural" barriers to success (all purely psychological) that the "diverse" crowds face, the only difference is that nobody is commissioning blue-ribbon panels to analyze how to get you more interested in government institutions.

Finally, regarding exhibits more focused on "diversity" - it doesn't work. I have even been to the Negro league baseball museum / Jazz museum smack in the center of the historically black neighborhoods of Kansas City, and there were more whites inside than blacks, despite the fact that I didn't see a white guy on the streets approaching the museum for miles!
