I smoked from 95 till 02, didn't have a single smoke until November 04. Unfortunately started smoking again last October.

I carried the same Zippo for almost all of the 7 years I smoked. When I started again in October, I just used a plain Bic.

Finally dug out the old Zippo last week. Damn this thing is cool.

WHY?

Congrats on your quitting - but you need a time out for starting again.....

IMO Zippo's aren't cool.

There are many great windproof lighters (I have two) made for outdoor camping gear that will put Zippo's to shame!

There used to be a kick A$$ web site that was about doing tricks witha zippo lighter thoose were some cool tricks....

Tell me about it. I'm a victim of working with a habitual chain smoker. After being around him for 2 years, I just couldn't take the temptation any longer.

That is a cool zippo, I have the same one. I bought it new in 1994 and carried it with me all over the world, but I quit a few years ago so now it just sits, all beat up, at the bottom of a rubbermaid container with other keepsakes.

Mine is still in the felt lined tin, never been used. Got it from the VFW.

The ONLY good thing about smoking is that it gives you a legitimate reason to carry a Zippo around.

I have had a Zippo for a long time, but I don't smoke. Still love the Zippo though.

I can't explain why they're so cool.

I've got two of them, and I've never smoked in my life.
Link Posted: 3/13/2006 9:29:30 PM EDT
My definition of cool is Humphrey Bogart in a trenchcoat and fedora, leaning up against a street lamp post at night, lighting up a cigarette with his zippo.

But no, I don't smoke.

I dug mine out last week and started using it again.. I dunno, it's just one of those things

ETA.. Plus they are made nearby (Bradford, PA)
Link Posted: 3/13/2006 9:54:10 PM EDT
I like 'em.
They aid an air of class to smoking.
Besides - who else here has picked up a chick because you lit her smoke with a zippo?
They are perfect conversation starters...
Link Posted: 3/13/2006 10:18:59 PM EDT
That ping when you open a Zippo, and the click when you close it. The just-right feel in your hand. The simplicity of the design. And nearly endless designs available. All that make Zippo cool.
Link Posted: 3/13/2006 10:24:57 PM EDT
I love my Zippo. Sturdy, high quality, simple and absolutely reliable. In a world full of disposable crap and breakable techno-wizzy products, Zippo lighters are icons that are still made to last.

You should see the things in Japan. They're nut about 'em. Standard Zippos go for the equivalent of about $30. Engraved ones (especially from Navy ships) fetch over $40. I saw a few gold plated ones for $70. Guys cleaned out the ship's store just to resell them to the novelty shops.
Link Posted: 3/13/2006 10:25:32 PM EDT
If all the above isn't enough, if you break it or wear it out, you call them and they send you a postage paid envelope to send it back to them under warranty.
Link Posted: 3/14/2006 12:46:59 PM EDT
Why are they cool? They feels great in your hand, they have a long history, and they are made in America, and I believe waranteed for life.
Link Posted: 3/14/2006 12:54:20 PM EDT
Because they will last through an entire live performance of "Freebird" and still have enough juice left to fire up your last Kool Menthol.

I never liked the taste they gave to a cigarette. The new windproofs are much cooler.

The definition of "cool".....Is just BEING "cool".

Zippos are just..."cool".

I smoked for a few years.

Clearly, Zippos are cool.

We had a Troop CDR that w got a Zippo
for...Engraved.......

"You're OK, sir."

Was the inscription.

I love Zippos.

I have a comulson to buy them, even though I have no use for them.

CHAD!

Link Posted: 3/14/2006 1:34:25 PM EDT
Now, tell us the story of the Chadanesian lighter...that's rather, uh, unique, I'd imagine.
Link Posted: 3/14/2006 1:36:55 PM EDT
My Zippo from 1985. Bought this one in Germany at the PX when I started smoking. Added my unit crest.

My Grandpa's lighter. Not a Zippo but "Penguin" brand.

The lighter is from CHAD. The country, not the guy down the street who walks around in his underwear.

Do I win? I cant find exactly what the eagle is for. I dont know if its the national bird, or just a symbol. The eagle inspires many many cultures.

ETA - I said this in the chat room first!
[16:27] Mister44: CHAD!

Zippos are the equivalent of the 1911 for lighters. It has been eclipsed by superior designs, but there are just so damn many different ones out there...you can find one for any taste. They look neat and they've got history, and they still do the job they were designed to.
