By hunting I mean 24"-26" bbl., 3"-3.5" chamber, synthetic stock. Basically not a defense gun.

Is the Benelli Nova the one to get?

I like the NOVA. I like the mag cut off so you can eject the one in the chamber and not chamber another one. Gotta luv the 870, although the finish on the 870 Express leaves a lot to be desired.

I think if you are willing to spend up to $500, you should definately look at the 870 Wingmaster. It has a much higher quality finish and prettier stock than the Express models. Or, you could buy an 870 Express for hunting, and spend the other $250 on an Express HD for bedside applications....

TRUE, i say find an older 870 wingmaster. reliable 870, with a nice smooth finish, also, new remingtos have this BS locking system. i used it twice and it failed to unlock one of those times. a older 870 is the best.

I'll be the lone voice of dissent. A Mossberg 500 is all you need. If you've got a special deer slug season in your area, they're available in packages containing both barrels. It's a little cheaper than the 870 but no less of a gun unless you hate plastic. My 500 won me an electronic powder trickler in a trapshoot this weekend.

Mossberg 500! You can get them for about $250.00

Buy 2 one for the house and one for the car, just like the lil. handy vacs on TV[:D]

For the money and reliability you can't beat Remington 870. I have one for years and hunted from doves to Canada geese and had no problems w/ it.

I'm also partial to the 870. One consideration is for lefties, however. In that case, the Browning BPS would be worth a look. I've owned a couple of Moosebergs, but wouldn't rate them as a great gun. The damn forends rattle. Makes turkey hunting more of a challenge. The stock on a 500/835 just never fit me right.

Yeah, if you want a pump, get an 870. The Benelli Nova doeasn't have the variety of options/accessories that you can find for an 870.

I'm partial to the Nova myself because its ALL black! The main reason I like the Nova is because the action is held in literally by 2 pins just like, albeit smaller, the AR takedown pins... pull those two pins out and the whole trigger assembly comes out for very easy cleaning.... price? You can get one for under $400 bucks!

Speaking of which... I have the 26 (maybe 28) inch hunting barrel with removable chokes... anybody wanna trade for their 18" rifled slug barrel?

I bought mine with the intent of buying the 18" model, but couldnt find one... sales guy said that the 18" barrel would be available as an accessory 6 months later... well that was 2 years ago and Benelli still has made it available for separate purchase!

Anybody wanna trade barrels?

I own a Mossberg 500, Rem 870, 11-87, and a Benelli Nova 24" shot barrel.

The Nova is my hunting pump gun of choice. It patterned better with the factory choke tube than my buddy's 870 with the $45 Briley turkey tube. Its lighter than the 870 which makes it much easier to carry. The recoil with 3 1/2s is more.........but you don't feel it when your shooting your turkey or goose. It is the best out there IMO for what I use it for. I like the new technology and it is an excellent design. I would not hesitate to use it for self defense.

Go with the 870 if you want a 3.5 inch. They are a good price, parts are easy to get, and there are plenty of smiths to work on them.

Why must it have a synthetic stock?

My vote would go to a Winchester Model 1912, made of nickel steel (older ones).

But, for a new rifle...Remington 870 Express 28" bbl for $220 at your local sporting goods store (and yes, you could probably get sythethic for $10 more).

I'm a leftie, and I have a 870 wingmaster lefty and a 16 guage browning BPS, both rock, I also have a beretta 1201 fp, but hitting ducks more than 15 yards away might be difficult with that one, good thing it's the fastest action in the world and hold 6 rounds. [:D]

Hmmm, I guess I'm doing something wrong. I bought my Wingmaster in '63 for $49.95 NIB, have shot approx. 100,000 rds through it, and only clean it every other year(action)and have never had to replace a part on it or have it worked on. Next door neighbor bought a Mooseboogger 500 and had to replace the safety on it the first time he used it. 870 RULES

Ill thrown in another comment. I like the 870 for a home-d gun. For a nice hunting gun I love the Browning BPS with the synthetic stock. The fit and finish is perfect. Bottom loading and bottom ejecting, drops empty hulls back in the boat or blind or about 4 feet in front of you. Action is smooth, top tang safety which I prefer on a hunting gun. The factory stock is also a bit longer than the 870 that helps for us vertically enhanced folk. It is no deal compared to the 870 but I think it is worth it to have a top notch pump hunting shotgun.

I own a Mossberg 500 and a Remington 870. No real problems with either one. I like the position of the safety on the 500 but the action isn't nearly as slick as the 870. Go 870.

Rem 870 Express . 12 Ga. and 20Ga. No failures to feed or fire. EVER! It may miss! However, my
Browning Citori Lightning in 20 Ga. NEVER misses. Not me. The gun kills when the trigger is pulled.

My Super Black Eagle has worked like a dream. If I had to get another pump I would get the Nova. I've had a Browning BPS and it has jammed on me quite a few times.

Speaking of Remington shotguns, did anybody else ever notice that once in a while an 870 Express slips out of the Remington factory wearing a WALNUT stock and forearm?

I picked up a cute youth model 20 gauge like this for about $220 once, and saw at least one 12 gauge with the walnut before too. My 20 is a little jewel; with it's 21 inch barrel, it's almost like one of those "Special Field" upland guns, but half the cost. With the recoil pad, even my wife likes shooting it. And she thinks my SKS kicks too hard!

Apparently the clerks in the store where I bought this couldn't tell walnut from beech (or whatever), as they looked at me kinda funny when I insisted on taking the display gun instead of the new boxed one they brought out.
