I emailed George Harris of SIG USA and this is the email that I got back. I basically said that most of us would prefer the classic lines of the 550 and the 551. Most of us already have AR15s so why to copy them?

ARDOC

Thanks for your input. You are in the majority of the commercial market.

George

I hope he means they got the message and will go the way of the 550 and 551.

Keep your fingers crossed.

cool

I'll take one original, and one Tapco special.

You guys disappoint me.

You should know the SOP for situations just like this: Get Both.

Maybe bit to quote someone else fingers crossed expectations low.
Link Posted: 3/12/2006 11:36:59 AM EDT
Like he said, we allready have AR15's. I want the Sig 551, not some Tapco knockoff.
Link Posted: 3/12/2006 11:42:05 AM EDT
I emailed him too. It's a good sign that they actually took the time to respond to all of us that emailed about it. I din't rant and rave and whine about the new one though (tapco special), just thanked them for bringing it to market period, and asked for a nice original side folder and flush rail as options. I don't give a crap about the diopter sight or original front sight. I just want a functional gas piston rifle that takes AR mags for the prices they are quoting.

Thats what I basically told him as well.

I hope a ton of us emailed him, we might actually be able to guide the development of the 556 quite a bit. I think the real money maker for them could be the mags, if they are reliable (well they are Sig I guess) and will work in normal ARs. I'd love to have mags I could join together for quick reloads!
Link Posted: 3/12/2006 4:55:31 PM EDT
I believe they will listen to us, they can make a hell of alot of money off the 556 if they listen.
Link Posted: 3/12/2006 5:48:05 PM EDT
My fingers are crossed.

I hope SigArms understands what a lot AR15/EBR fans are looking for now. Not all of us are high speed/low drag operators.

Scott

I wonder if a copy of the 550 buttstock will increase the price much ? If it does, then I'm taking the AR collapsible stock on mine. I was looking at an AR180B and the VEPR, but I'm glad I waited now.

Post the e-mail addy...

We can all let him know we want the 550/1 line...

Good job, ARDOC.

It would be nice to have a proper 55x, rather than some First Samco'd XTREME-EDITION!!!@!!! eyesore. Even if it cost a bit more, so what? You want dirt cheap, get an AK or put together a AR kit.
Link Posted: 3/12/2006 6:43:33 PM EDT
Excellent.

I do hope they stick with AR mags though. I dunno how affordable 550 mags are.

How is the SIG 556 a bad looking rifle?

Mine will be as close to the original 55x as possible.....

About $50 each.

It's not, if you haven't been looking at the 550 for 20 years drooling over one.

Trust me, if the 556 stayed as it is, long enough, people would warm to them. This site is proof of that. The AR was not well-received when it debuted, amidst an ocean of heavy, wooden clad rifles. It was "a toy", "black ugliness", etc. Now, it's one of the most popular rifle variants EVER.

Too busy posting cut-and-paste articles to know anything about SIG rifles?

Just got a response from Harris today. Here was his response:

roboman

Got it! Thanks!

George

Link Posted: 3/27/2006 9:05:35 PM EDT
I'll take one now (on the waiting list) and go for classic HG and grip later on. I have warmed to the AR-style stock and I'll leave it be. I'll get the rifle first. Worry about the plastic furniture later.
Link Posted: 3/28/2006 6:53:35 AM EDT
I sent George an email with pretty much the same comments.....

There are plenty of AR15 builds I have done, and can currently do, but I was hoping for something more along the lines of the 550/551/552 with the new SIG, and hope they would change the design of the 556 before final release.

I also thanked SIG for bringing the rifle to the US civilian market.

Here's the response I got back:

Thanks for the input. Your points are well taken!

Regrds

George

The Magpul CTR would probably look good on the SIG rifle, especially if it did not come with a folding stock.

It's not. But then I have M4 stocks on FALs and AKs, too.

Why do all of his responses sound like the answers on a ball?

Probably because he has to answer 100 emails a day about someone not liking the new 556 and how they like the old 550/551 better.

I bet it would be hard to come up with something inciteful after the first dozen or so emails.

It probably gets real old real fast when 100s of people email you that you have your head up your ass.

Hopefully it's not just lip service and SIG comes out with a 550/551 type rifle instead of a Tapco AR-15.

I spoke to one of their VP's and he said that they'll be moving the furniture more towards the classic 552 look with a collapsible stock. HOWEVER, the flattop is here to stay, although it will be lower than what you saw on the preproduction version.

We should be taking a tour of the Sig factory soon, hopefully we'll have some trigger time on it.

Unless it's all bullshit, at least we have a gun company listening to it's customers and trying to offer a new evil black rifle.
Not to mention all kinds of new handguns.
All while many others are working on smart guns, neutered weapons and collecting ballistic fingerprints.
Link Posted: 3/28/2006 5:21:49 PM EDT

Hopefully, Sig will get this right one of these days. Unless that is a Blackwater edition muzzle rise enhancer?

If SIG does listen to the consumer, then I think we will all be satisfied...............I know I am gonna keep an eye on what the finished product looks like
