Given the choice of any one of the above mentioned battle rifles, which one would you choose? Purpose would be for plinking, whitetail deer hunting, and just because everyone needs a 308 battle rifle.

Compare cost to purchase, cost of magazines, ease of maintenance, etc.

Yeah, I know the exact same topic has been discussed before but I could not find it.

Thanks in advance.

Without even doing this poll, I can tell you the results.

Even if you have criteria that favored the M1A or AR10, the FAL will always win this poll.

Already have a FAL.

I am waiting on the RRA LAR10.

I always vote against the FAL, because I want to help lower demand so they're cheaper when I buy one.

What about price of mags, accuracy, reliability, etc?

Not an option here. Must have detachable magazines and flash hider. Also must be 308.

Does an M14 qualify as a battle rifle? Why is it not part of this poll?

What M1A can you buy that actually has a history? For history, I bought USGI Garands.

I prefer a flash suppressor on my rifles.

Make no mistake, the FAL is by far the preferred battle rifle.

+1, FAL all the way, the free worlds right arm, the Selious scouts, what's not to like?
Link Posted: 3/8/2006 4:51:05 PM EDT
Personally, I have a Springfield Armory all USGI M1A NM and SAR48(a 100% FAL clone made by Imbel of Brazil and imported by Springfield Armory).

If I could only buy one, I would go with the FAL.

My reasons are that mags and parts are plentiful and readily available for reasonable prices.

M14/M1A mags are still a bit expensive.

The M1A is a good gun, but it's initial design dates back to the mid-1930s. The AR10 and FAL are modern design, witness the expertise needed to keep the M1A shooting accurately.

But overall, inspite of the technical stuff, I would try to shot a few rounds through those guns and see how they feel to you as a shooter. That should be the deciding factor.

My 5¢

Well at least I didn't say detachable clips. Besides, I like for mine to hide the whole damn flash.

"M14" is the name typically given to US military issue rifles, most of which are fully automatic. "M1A" generally refers to the semi-automatic version produced by Springfield Armory Inc. and its clones. The price of a true select-fire M14 is way out of the question.

How many times have we seen these polls? How many times more are we going to have to view another FAL victory? The Right Arm of the Free World didn't get that way by being a reworked Garand.

The reason they are called flash suppressors is because the most flash any FS has removed is 99% IIRC, there has not been one to totaly eliminate it (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

Hense the rolling eyes expression. I know its a flash suppressor.

Although, as a side note, silencer is the term used by the original designer of what we now refer to as (sound) suppressors. And semi-automatic pistols feed rounds automatically while revolvers don't revolve around shit, the cylinder rotates.

Back to the subject matter though....

....what's wrong with AR10s.

Can't go wrong with the FAL though... I have to base that on what I've read, I've never fired one.

I've got all 3. Go with the AR-10 for ergonomics and ease of mounting optics.

Then why is AR10 getting pumbled in the poll? Too expensive, too finicky, expensive mags, inaccurate?

It's pretty easy to mount optics on the FAL, you know, and it doesn't even necessitate getting a flattop upper like you have to get with an AR15/10. Just buy an extreme mount from DSA and voila!

An AR10 or 15 does not require a flattop for optics. You can easily mount optics on a carry handle.

Expensive???????? I have 4, so I would say no. Have you priced M1As, HKs, or DSAs?
Finicky????? Again, the 4 I have say it ain't so.
Expensive mags????? No more so than the M14 mags.
Inaccurate?????? You have to be kidding.

Bill Clinton usually did well in the polls. I guess that means he was a great President, huh.

Like it is with other rifles, most of that is "I heard this.............I heard that...........".

This is true, but I do so like flattop AR15/AR10's. Besides I have never used the carry handle on my AR15 and I doubt I ever will.
