Quite a few of my daughters(8) classmates have cell phones.
So of course she is bugging me for one also.

I think she is too young but what do you guys think.

For those who have given cell phones to their children,od they abuse the phone minutes?

cell phone for an 8 year old? Hell no.

The only way I'd give a kid that young a cell phone is if it was restricted to calling their parents office, cell#, home, and 911.

i say wait until they are older.  what is an 8 year old going to need a cell phone for? they are too young to  be doing anything without adult supervision in the first place, and the adult should have a phone

I didn't get mine until I was 19. Until then I used..................... A LAND LINE!

What the hell do kids need a cell phone for? From what I saw from friends in high school the ones that paid for it themselfs were the only ones that didnt talk 2000 minutes a month a run up 300+ phone bills every month.

For the sake of all her school teachers, PLEASE insist that she only uses the thing at school in emergencies.

My little sister has one (13) and it is damn good she did!  She and a friend were waiting in the car while my mom ran into the corner store to get some hamburger or whatever for dinner.  This weird lady comes over and starts fucking with the door lock to the car.  She is really trying to get in, and looks my sister in the eye and keeps trying.  My sister starts honking the horn (nobody in the area does anything) and calls my mom.

Fortunately, it ended without incident.  The weird lady ran away and the police did nothing.

On a positive note, my mom wants to get her CCW from this incident.

ETA: My sister is not spoiled, and realizes that the phone is a tool, not a toy.

I think it should be over 13, under seems a little too young in my opinion.

REal young? Get them a   Firefly. Other than that use your judgement. I like the idea of m kids being able to call for assistance and to let me know they are ok.

I was 18 before I had a cellphone.  My older sister was in college before her first phone.

There are new phones out there geared for younger kids that only allow pre-programmed numbers and also have a direct-dial for emergency assistance.

13+ for a cell phone.  That's a good age IMO to learn responsibillity.

WildBoarHow old are your kids?
