USA Orders 10,000 JDAMs for $240M

Boeing subsidiary McDonnell Douglas Corp in St Louis, MO received a $240 million firm-fixed-price with cost-reimbursement type for alternate disputes resolution contract for 10,000 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) Lot 10 Guided Vehicle (GV) kits. The JDAM is a strap-on kit that turns existing 500, 1000 and 2000-pound bombs into precision weapons with Inertial Navigation System (INS)/Global Positioning Systems (GPS) capability. Its cheap cost (under $25,000 per) and effectiveness have made it both a transformational weapons system and a major project success story; future upgrades include the addition of a laser sensor for even finer target correction and the ability to hit moving objects.

Solicitations began in November 2005, negotiations were complete in March 2006, and work will be complete March 2008. The Headquarters Air to Ground Munitions Systems Wing at Eglin Air Force Base, FL issued the contract (FA8681-06-C-0058).

contract to be completed by 2008 so i doubt they will be sued there since iran will most likely be bombed before then.

And that's just a start. Even 20K isn't that much for a country twice the size of Texas.

Boy I don't know... 10,000 targets is a lot, I reckon most of the country is desert and when you combine this with Tomahawks etc, that's a lot of whoop-ass. Are there 10,000 targets worth hitting in most countries?

Gimme 15 minutes and a map...I'll find 10,000 targets in a hurry!

Well, look at it this way. We already know that Iran has spread out its nuclear facilities all over the country to make it harder to be bombed into oblivion. They obviously learned Iraq's lesson (Iraq had to learn it three times, 1982, 1991, 1998-2003). I'm guessing we'd literally dump dozens upon dozens of these things at every site suspected of being a nuke facility. Now add in the military targets. Now add in the infrastructure targets.

10K would last about two weeks.

But not all the munitions will be JDAMs either.

I, for one, would love to see an order for 10,000 MOABs for use in Iran

25000 dollars is as or more expensive than the last batch.

Material and labor costs, for starters.

We could build them in Viet Nam, I suppose, and import material from China's horde.

actually a lot of the JDAMs are made from stockpied vietnam era bombs.

hopefully these will be finished just in time for Irans announcement that they will only sell oil for Euros. THAT will be the true impetus for war just like it was with saddam. look at N. Korea.... we arent really serious about stopping nuclear proliferation. we've been smiling while N. Korea corn holes us on the nuclear issue for years but the minute the iranian presidnet announces he will no longer accept dollars for oil...its on like donkey kong.
