Snorer in the court? Ruth Bader Ginsburg snoozes

Justice dozes off during political redistricting hearing, colleagues let her sleep

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Was it a case of dreaming of a better America, napping on the job, or just being asleep at the switch?

Serving on the highest court in the land is apparently a tiring affair for at least one Supreme Court justice who caught 40 winks on the bench, literally.

According to the Associated Press, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg snoozed during oral arguments today over political redistricting in Texas.

"The subject matter was extremely technical," notes AP writer Gina Holland, "and near the end of the argument Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg dozed in her chair."

Actual artist rendition of Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg asleep during hearing

During a report by Megyn Kendall of Fox News, an artist's sketch of the hearing was aired with Ginsburg's head using the bench as a pillow.

There was no word if there was any audible snoring echoing through the esteemed chamber, but the sleep session was noticed by Bader's colleagues who made a snap judgment to let their associate continue her slumber.

"Justices David Souter and Samuel Alito, who flank the 72-year-old, looked at her but did not give her a nudge," writes Holland.

The incident caught the attention of Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank, who writes:

"At first, she appeared to be reading something in her lap. But after a while, it became clear: Ginsburg was napping on the bench. By Bloomberg News's reckoning -- not denied by a court spokeswoman -- Ginsburg's snooze lasted a quarter of an hour.

"It's lucky for Ginsburg that the Supreme Court has so far refused to allow television in the courtroom, for her visit to the land of nod would have found its way onto late-night shows."

What's changed?

Thats Supreme. Give her a break, she earned it.
Link Posted: 3/6/2006 6:38:33 AM EDT

Wow how would you like to finally get a chance to argue in front of SCOTUS and one of then be asleep.

It is time for her to retire. We EXPECT them to listen and make sound judgements on all cases.....even the boring ones.

Politics aside......liberal or not, this is fooked up.

Really?

You're ok with a judge going night night in court?

Of course, it IS RBG...It doesn't really matter if she goes to
sleep or not, becasue she doesn't really care about the constitution anyway.
Link Posted: 3/6/2006 6:53:14 AM EDT
Wow, just wow. Seems like there ought to be a valid legal argument to not let her vote on this case.

Ronald Reagan took daily naps.
As our oldest president, I thought that was wise.
But, that didn't stop the MSM of accusing him of being "asleep at the wheel".

Grounds for an appeal?

She probably was gona vote against it from the beginning, so she figured she didn't need to be awake in the first place.
Link Posted: 3/6/2006 8:59:58 AM EDT
Oral arguments are pretty much a formality. Usually, the decision has already been made on how they'll vote. You don't really think they come to their conclusions based on 30 minutes of oral arguments by each side do you?

Not trying to defend her, but wasn't Rhenquist famous for taking naps durring arguments? I think it was him, I had a prof who once argued in front of the SCOTUS and I think he said it was him who whould always put his head back with his eyes closed the entire time.

Since there is a transcript of the entire conversation that happened it is not too hard to know what was said durring that time. It's just that you can't ask questions when you are asleep.

Those pictures a hilarius btw keep them comming!

Looks surprisingly like a local City Council meeting where they let the lowly rabble spout for 3 minutes. Some days there's a lot of rabble seeking their moment of glory and I can't really blame the Council for drifting off but then again, that's what they're paid to do.

Yeah, really, sometimes these things run from the 4 pm private study sessions to after midnight. The public comments part is sometimes entertaining but more often tedious and boring listening to the same complaint worded 30 different ways.

Well, ok. I take offense when public officials fall asleep in the course of thier
duties listening to the people participate in the democratic process.

Guess that's just me though. I think it's friggin inexcuseable.

Ever been to a Supreme Court hearing?

They can indeed be boring as hell.

Besides, she is an older lady, and we have no idea what meds she might be on. Anyone ever taken Benadryl? Didn't it make you sleepy?

Cut the woman some bloody slack.

I prefer the sleeping RBG to an awake one ANY day, as asleep she is less likely to end up trampling our rights.

Hell, I would personally volunteer to shoot that woman in the ass with a tranquilizer dart before every session if it would keep her from making any more inane rulings....

Well, it was about the TX redistricting thing. I guess in her defense, she already knew
what way she was going to vote.

She really didn't even need to show up.

My only regret is that she woke up.
