Combination:

Firewall ZoneAlarm Pro
Virus McAfee (if you happen to be on comcast cable internet you can download it for free)
Ads etc combination of AdAware and Spybot

But the key no matter what you have is running it often and updating frequently  (if you do not have them set for auto updates/running)

Ewido security suite is extremely good, but it's a subscription service.  it think it's a 1 month trial, then like 30 bucks to buy it.  it gives active virus/spyware protection with on demand system scanning

Zone Alarm is a process pig. I have run it for 2 or 3 years. It worked ok and it might work for you but it was just eating up my system.  I just bought a great little firewall called Kerio by sunbelt software.

Microsoft Antispyware is great. I have been using it for over a year. It actively watches for spyware and protects from browser hijacking as well.

I use Symantec antivirus and have used it for about 10 years. It has its flaws but they all do.

I don't work for any of these companies as well, just a user.

Best? Linux.

Most practical, AVG antivirus, spybot/adaware for nasties, and a router with a hardware firewall.
