how many pages did it go for?  and did it end with a lock, or did people just slowly lose interest until the thread ended up in the archives?

87 pages.

40 pages is the max, then the thread automatically dies. There have been a number of them go that long.

What he said.

There are a couple threads that go the 40, get locked, then another is started linking back, then that reaches 40 and gets locked, then another is started and linked back and so on.

I would wager that some of the abortion threads have gone that long.

Chuck Norris told Edsr to do that when he set up the site.

Probably one of the most viewed, ever...

IIRC, a thread can go over 40 pages but no pages beyond 40 will show up.

The airsoft ridicule picture thread had more hits than the longest running BOTD thread (or anything else) at the time.  There was nothing that rivaled it.

Everything stops at 40 so times viewed is the best measure...and the airsoft thread totally rocked everything else by that measure.

That was back when Kangaroo-AR15A3 was here.  Kangaroo, Dolomite and I were the "ARFCOM Saints" during that period when airsoft would pop up and get soundly trounced through withering, merciless ridicule.

No they auto lock at 40 pages.
Jack Bauer Power Hour threads usually hit 40 pages less than halfway through the season.

I think technically the Battlestar Galactica and 24 threads are the longest running since they have had many 40+ page threads that are continuations of other locked 40 page threads.

BotD doesn't count.

I think that the aquabumping thread deserves honorable mention.

As do the Battlestar Galactica threads.

In summation there have been dozens of 40 page threads. 40 pages is the limit so nothing will ever go past that.

AH-HA!

How would you know about the aquabumping thread if you've only been here since February?

Who are you REALLY?

If I remember correctly, the Sept 11th thread was largest and I believe it was before the 40 page lock, too.

Wasn't there some kind of Range Report thread that got huge, very quickly, was locked, and now no one will talk about it?  I'm a relative newbie so maybe it's just AR folklore but I've seen it referenced here before...

Let's see:
The "ARFCOM Ladies thread" in the women's forum.
The "Arfcom hotties" thread, same forum.

I believe there was a linked, locked version before the "Official ARFCOM Wives' Club" thread in Team.

I think the "M&A Houston Gun Show thread" went 41 pages.

wrong.  the 'Battle for Monrovia' thread had around 400000 reads, IIRC.
