You are more likely to be killed by drowning or fire than by a firearm.

Transport Accidents 48,366

More people seem to kill themselves with a firearm than are assaulted. Seems that VPC should be working on mental health control instead of gun control.

Strangling yourself must take a lot of effort.

autoerotic asphyxiation gone bad.. happens way more than you think but they just lump it into the suicide catagory when they were just trying to get off more intensly.

Last I checked, 1,184 was a larger number than 1,111.

But if they were successful at that, it might dry up their support base.

Does anybody know if it's true what people say about you being more likely to be killed/assaulted by somebody you know, or what the percentages are? Or is it just a myth that gets perpetuated?

It's also much higher than the figure I saw for a recent year which was around 600-650.

Ban poison!
Ban Ropes!
Ban sharp objects!
Ban high places!
And most of all ban transportation!

It’s for the children! Just because you’re a depressed means I should sacrifice my liberties for you so you can live.

Perhaps because crime rates actually have been starting to rise again in major urban centers since 2004?

Not supporting the AWB, but it seems strange to have crime rate lowering in cities like New York and Washington since '94 only to start rising again since Sep. 2004.

I have no argument with this assertion at all. If some mope violates his protective order, assaults his wife and she shoots him, there you have it!

My gut feeling--and it's a big gut--is that most reported assault is domestic violence or neighborhood scuffles. Face it: You tend to be around people you know so there's a good chance those are the ones you will fight with.

I'm sure it is true that more people get killed/assaulted by those they know. However, you are mainly talking about the Jerry springer type housholds. If you stay away from the drama and the drugs, the odds of survival rises dramatically.

Figures lie, and liars figure.

I found this distrubing

Death by Intentional self-harm, 31,655
%Intentional self-harm by firearm, 17,108

Deaths by Intentional self-harm, 31,655
%Firearm discharge 1,184

Death by Assault 17,638
%Assault by firearm 11,829

So suicide and probable suicide by firearms = 18,292 or 60.7% Gun deaths

vs

Death by assault with firearms = 11,829 or 39.3% Gun deaths
