Get the rifle.  Always nice to have a different toy to play with.

And you do not have to put on optics that cost more than the rifle.  A 300-400 dollar leupold will almost always be more than adequate (In my opinion, and yes, I have some expensive glass in the collection).

The biggest problem is the fact that I have very limited ability to shoot long distance (over 200 yards). The rifle would see very little use.

Why is this...? I know that somewhere in Texas there has to be more than 200yards of open ground.....

Get the Savage with the Choate stock and put a 10x42 Super Sniper on it.  If Savage doesn't have that in stock, get the plain stock one and buy either an Ultimate Varmint or Ultimate Sniper directly from Choate.

I have both my 10FP in .308 and my 110FP in .30-06 in Choate Ultimate Varmint stocks.  They way I look at it is that be it Remmy or Savage or just about anything else, it will be getting a different stock, so that is a non-factor.

This was my 110 in the Ultimate Sniper stock:

I had the 10FP in one as well, but sold both and got Varmint stocks for both because they are lighter and I prefer the look now.

I don't have a pic of the 110 in it's new Choate, but here is the 10FP in it's new stock:

How much work is it to add this stock yourself? Is it a straight drop-in (-on ?) replacement, or is there fitting required?

Nope, no fitting required.  The new stocks are cut for the AccuTrigger, but a non-AccuTrigger model fits just fine.  It's a simple procedure.  You take out the two screws holding the factory stock on, remove the stock, put the new stock in place, and insert the new screws that come with the stocks.

The only tricky part is making sure you get the mag follower inserted correctly, but you would have that with any bolt rifle unless you have one that has detachable mags.

Choate does not make stocks for the detachable mag Savages, but those would not be the Tacticals anyway.

That sounds good. I've heard a lot of people complaining about the Savage stocks being "weak", meaning that they aren't as sturdy if you put a lot of pressure on them. It certainly sounds like the rifle is good to go as-is and would let me get a good feel for the precision rifle game as long as I don't put excessive force on flexing the stock. I could always add the more expensive stock as my interest grows and my desire for a more rugged rifle increases.

I sold my Savage .223 10FP to a guy at work to finance the .308.  He wanted to shoot it before he bought it, sounds fair enough.  With the factory stock and a cheap scope, he was shooting 1 inch groups at 100 yards, so it ain't as bad as some try to make it out as.

Get the upper.......this is AR15.com

Evertytime I buy a non-AR gun, I usually end up selling it and buying another AR.
