This was the average for the READERS of Rifle magazine that responded to their survey.

They have proved that the more guns you have, the more likely you are to respond to a survey asking about how many guys you have or that people lie about how many guns they have when responding to a survey.

For me the answer is 6.

2 X AR
2 X 9mm
1 X hunting rifle
1 X .22

See you later, I'm off to go boating.

At one point my grandpa had nearly 200 (perhaps more), most either kifed from back in his Army days or built from kits. His office on base was right across from where they held captured arms and other arms for testing. They included a handful of unfired HK rifles and an unfired Thompson, a handful of Lugers and a handful of other not so common and not so cheap (anymore) arms. Most of the guns he acquired unfired, remained that way as long as he owned the,.

Most of these were bought dirt cheap by today's standard. He bought an HK91 NIB very cheaply years ago and ultimately sold it for about double and thought he made out like a bandit. The gun shop has it on sale for almost $4,000.00. I don't recall exactly but he only gave a few hundred for it.

He also had a virtual armory of SKS', one of his favorite rifles. He said the most he gave for any one was about $75. He cannot comprehend today's prices and says that if he would never invest so heavily again in firearms. He thinks I'm foolish to do so. Probably so. If he knew what I paid for some, he'd whip me stupid.

His favorite pistol was the P38 hands down. He often opted for either the P38, one of lugers or a Ruger .22 (MkII maybe) with a long barrel when plinking at cans.

He usually used a semi-auto winchester .22 LR for varmints or an Enfiel P17 for bigger pests. Grandpa's bedside pistol is a Browning in 9mm and his backup is a short barreled .38. He likely cannot even shoulder a rifle anymore.

Grandpa on the 1911:
It's a great gun for defending yourself in a crowded elevator.

Of course, you have to remember that all the 1911s he saw were WWII Army issue and usually beaters.

Gramps taught me about safety. He almost killed his 1st Sargeant ( i think) with a pistol once. He has not had an Nd since then. He got me into firearms at age 7 and bought me my first bb gun:

Here is the man himself circa 2000-2001 (not sure) pictured with my brother (now deceased). Grandpa has the P17, I believe and Jon has the Bearcat .22.

Grandpa is 86, 87 this year. Hopefully he will stick around a while longer. I do wish my uncle hadn't gotten most of the toys, however.

edit: I am not surprised...after all, there are how many firearms in circulation? Aren't there more privately owned firearms than people in the United States counting every man, woman and child? Although the firearm climate has gotten unfriendly, firearms, for most of U.S. history have been a basic tool that everyone had and knew how to use. For many in rural areas, that remains true.

I got the following response from Wolfe Publishing:

"The number -- 66 -- is not a typo. And, yes, the printed version of our reader's survey results can be found on our web page. From the home page, go to "Advertising" then click on the "Rifle Media Kit," and on the 5th page of the 14-page media kit is the breakdown of the number of guns our readers own."

Okay, here's the link to the pdf mentioned above. Rifle magazine media kit with reader survey results

I was flipping through some back copies of Rifle last night and read one of editor columns about the survey they did. Now this is a magazine that probably has more hunter-types versus Arfcommer-types read it. I was really suprised to read the survey had shown that on average people owned 66 guns.  This  included rifles, shotgus and handguns. This really go me to thinking so I counted up what I have, I think I got them all although I did keep remembering ones stuck in odd places, and I came up a bit short of 66. My final count, barring finding something else, is 29. So, how many do you have?

I would like to show this to my wife.

Right off the bat, knock 7 off the count. Black powder guns are not regulated as firearms, and can be possessed by felons without penalty.

I know people with multi hundreds, but our shop has bought out many estates of people i would consider serious firearms people  and even then most of those were around 20-30 with the occasional one getting near 100
get many many walkins with  5-6 guns from a  deceased family member

I would say that  number is BS IMO

me personally i do not know the exact number  I have a good idea though

Ask me again this time next year

I anticipate at least 2 more this year. I'm getting a CMP Garand dammit! Possibly a 1911 or maybe another AR in 6.8 since Denny's post in AR discussions.

Decisions, decisions.

The problem with averages is that they can skew what the "average" person actually has.

If you take 10 people and nine of them have 1 gun but one is a collector with 100 guns then your average person has 11 guns (10.9 actually)...even though the majority only own 1.

I'm sure that there are a fair number of collectors out there that have hundreds...especially C&R guys who have been at it for 20 or 30 years. Hell, we've got one guy on this site that I know of with more than 60 handguns alone. People like that are undoubtedly skewing the "average"

That's why the most effective method is to take the mean, the median AND the mode....

havnt you taken a statistics class?

The mean may be 11, and the median is 49, BUT, the most telling in that group would be the mode: 1

This suddenly makes a hell of a lot more sense.  "Rifle" magazine's demographic is serious gun nuts, not the once-a-year deer hunter or the kid who goes plinking occasionally or the guy who has a shotgun and a Glock for home defense.
