I can't swim. Plus I don't really like swimming anyway so I am not missing out on much. Except maybe the lovely smell of chlorine and urine.

of course it did....he's here to tell it.

That is how I learned.  When I was 5, my uncle told me to take off my water wings. I did.  He picked me up and threw me in the deep end. I paniced a bit and then decided to swim.

I can still remember it vividly.  He had just got off work and was wearing a grey suit.

sweet survival skills dude!

Honestly though, I think EVERYONE should know howto swim.

I lived and worked in eastern NC when Rocky Mt, Tarboro, Greenville, NC areas flooded during hurricane ?floyd?

Upon going back to work...
A co-worker of mine told me she and her husband were about to put her children in a cooler and hope they would be rescued when the rescue boats showed up at their house.  I couldnt believe it....she and her husband accepted they were going to drown....None of them could swim.

My brother can't swim.  I don't understand it.  We grew up camping and being around lakes... he just can't relax.  I'd like to think it's just an act but there's been a few times that make me believe otherwise.

I can swim no problem.  I like it and would do it more often if Lake Superior wasn't so damn cold.

Somebody mentioned times earlier,

100 yard breast my senior year of highschool was 58.03 seconds.   My time was faster than a majority of the seed times for 100 yard backstroke.

Earned All American in 100 yard breast as well as 100 yard freestyle with a 47.5.

Only things I miss about swimming was being around 4-5% body fat if that and being able to look at some seriously fine asses that belonged to the girl's swim team.

I honestly had no idea that some people could not swim until 1992 when I went to basic training at FT. Jackson. We had many soldiers (primarily blacks) that could not swim! I was in shock!
I was a lifeguard at Ft. Story, VA (Va beach) for a few years. Good times, for sure.

Yes, I can swim.

Currently a Red Cross Certified Lifeguard.. (got re-upped last Sunday), been doing it for 3 years now. Along with that.. I am also WSI certified.

The people they are referring to that can't swim.. are the inner city youth. If you've ever been to a lake/park where the city kids visit, you'd know what I mean.

Atleast thats what I've been told.

There are those that can swim and those that think they can swim because they wade across their local feed pond or in-ground pool.  Then there are those that know they can swim to survive and to aid other to survive.

I'm a Naval Aircrewman, I am of the latter..

Like a fish. I grew up in California, and was never far from a swimming pool or lake. When I was a kid, I remember wanting to swim across the bay from Alcatraz someday. I had the potential at one point. Now, I'm waaaaaay too out of shape to even think about it.

Ive made my living on or underwater more than once.
One of the coolest jobs was way back in the late 70's I helped complete the underwater survey of Buck Island's coral reef system.

For more than 20 years the NPS and scientists have studied Buck Island's coral reef system.

isn't that amazing??? people can only hold their breaths for 30 seconds at a time and they think you're some kinda superhuman cuz you can swim 3 lengths of the pool without coming up for air!

never understood how people cannot learn to swim, it's the easiest thing in the world. when my father went to vietnam, we stayed in japan with my mom's family. one day we went to the beach and my uncle took me out into the ocean and threw me into an oncoming wave. i swallowed half the sea of japan but i sure as fuck learned how to swim! never looked back...

I've had lessons since I was 5, on the HS swim team for 3 years and did every event except the fly though my main concentration was freestyle.

When I was a member of the crew club in college there was a guy who was negative buoyant, it was fairly hard to watch him try the float test.

Same here as do all my kids. I have no memory of not being able to swim. My youngest was retriving things of the bottom of the deep end of the pool before he was 3.

I have a pool in my back yard and live on a deep water canal. Having non swimming children is not an opption.

I can't remember not knowing how to swim. However, my sister in law who grew up in Queens, NY only learned recently. I guess playing in the water from the fire hydrant isn't the same.

Swimming/water safety was required in elementary school in Hawaii.
Swimming/water safety was required in high school in Cali.
I swam on a swim team when i was like 11-12 y/o, then went out for the HS swim team my senior year mainly just to stay in shape. Lettered in it, mainly did the 100 fly, 100 free and 50 free. I'm a sprinter.
Recently I started swimming at the local Y to get back in shape and they have adult swim lessons going on too. They seem to fit the stereotype - mainly black people and a couple Hispanics. I too am amazed that any adult doesn't know how to swim, but good for them learning now.
My 91 year old grandmother still swims laps a couple times a week.
I hate cold water still though.

My parents rightfully thought that it was one of the life skills everyone/kid needs to learn.  Like how to ride a bike, drive a stick shift.  Just something that everyone will need to know how to do in life.

My mother cannot swim.

I swim for a living. <That;s me!
