Becaue you ruin the basic attraction to the dark side.

An AK is SIMPLE, RELIABLE, LIGHT AND EFFECTIVE.  Why put all the do dads on and make it into an ugly AR?  If you want an AR then buy one.   It doesnt make sense to ruin all that is good about an AK.

Carry all those rails, lights and other gadgets on a 20 mile hump and we will see how you feel.  Thats less ammo you can carry, more parts to break, not to mention cost.  You could buy 4-5 AKs for the price of one relatively simply equiped M4.

Some, like myself are more into it for the collection aspect.. Original military ones dont have all that crap on there.

Others that are into the shooting aspect are into keeping things simple.. Putting all the wazoo rails and crap doesnt do it for them.

Others think it looks gay, even if it improves the weapon.. Sort of the same reason most dont like the new Sig 556...

I think it's because AK's are an elemental type of rifle, rough and tough.  Placing all those do dads on one is like 22" chrome spinners on a trail Jeep.

Semper Fi

ETA: ARDOC and I must have been sharing a brain for a split second.

I feel the same way about my AR. I think adding a scope is extreme enough.

LOL, I feel you!  The horrors you must have seen!  It would have been like Spock after he shared his consciousness with dude.

I don't know either. I have two AK project going on, both are the most "hated" configurations in the AK world;
- one with OD green synthetic furniture
- one "Mall Ninja" with rails and a M4 stock

I however don't like wood stocks, and the only rifles I own with wood stocks were inherited.

I disagree.  I have as much in my AK-103 as many have in their ARs.  I like my AR and my AK for different reasons.  Kalashnikov for utter simplicity.

Because a pimped out AK is just Gay....

I own 5 AK's and not a single one has any foo foo shit on it...

But then again the only Foo Foo shit on my 8 AR's is a carry handle or the 4X Colt scope on my SP-1....

I just dont like it on any of my rifles it guess.

Pretty much.  AK's dont look right with picatinny rails, scout-style optics, lights, etc on them.

Because the AK is not a "high-speed low-drag operator" type gun. It's a "Use it as a boat oar, then let it sit overnight, kick open the rusted action and continue firing" weapon. Besides accessories on AK's piss Chuck Norris off, and nobody likes it when Chuck Norris is pissed off!

I have never understood this obsession with hanging crap off your rifle.  I'll bet video games are to blame.

Iron sights are all you'll ever need.

Would you take a nice restored/original '55 Chevy BelAir or '55 Ford Thunderbird and bolt on a bunch of riceburner accessories from your local auto parts store?

I know weapons shouldn't be judged on looks, but modern accessories just look better on modern weapons.

Most AK's tend to have a classic look to them, so modern accessories usually look out of place.

I try not to pick on anyone who chooses to do it, though.

I don't like hanging shit on my guns. My AR has an EOTech, thats it.
My AKs feature their beautiful wood furniture as GOD intended them to.

If anyone around here does'nt want their wood anymore, please, let me know!

The AK was designed to be a certain way.
On the same note, keep those rails off the M14, my M1 carbine, the M1 Garand, and my SKS.
Some people enjoy the simple elagance of steel and wood.

Mostly - it is because people who put rails aren't trying to make an AK better, they are trying to make an AK into an AR, which it is not.
I see a lot of this with the SKSs.
Guys I know buy an SKS, and mount a scope, folding polymer stock, bipod, 30 round duckbills, etc.
They are trying to make an SKS into an AK, something that it is not.

Does this make sense to folks out there?

Don't try and stereotype AK users. They come in all flavors from uber tactical, to just wood and steel.

My "wood and steel" AK looks very plain Jane except for the muzzle break, but it has a lot of work done to it. I own a Kobra for it, but it sits in an ammo crate. I have no desire whatsoever to hang crap on my AK. I can barely bring myself to put stuff on my AR. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Both rifles run just fine without eight metric tons of high tech shit hanging off them.

IMO, the AK is a rifle that is a stop gap weapon, a "catch all", it isnt meant to be a precision weapon.

Most of the other rifles out there (almost any NATO rifle) has much more engineering and precision going into the manufacturing than an AK.

I think the "lipstick on a pig" analogy is perfect as well.  It just doesnt look right.

Simple. Heard it on CNN last week. AK rounds are guided by Allah. No aiming needed. No sights either.

Im one who also gets tired of sterotypeing folks who own an AK or an AR. I own plenty of both and like someone already stated about AR's, " I have a 4X colt scope and it seems extrem to bolt it own. I also have an Kobra for an AK and I can't seem to place it own it also. KISS for all my rifles.Nuff said Wardawg
