I recently signed a contract on this house. I will be closing in about 2 weeks. I was at the house yesterday and I noticed that the outdoor fireplace doesn't have any chimney at all. All smoke/fumes would billow out of the front of the fireplace (which is under a covered porch).

The opening in the bottom is the fireplace, and the top opening is for a TV. The fireplace is plumbed for gas logs.

I might request the builder to install a chimney, but before I do I wanted to know if this is common. I'm sure this would be a lot of work and the builder may resist.

If it is gas log only and outdoors there is no need for a chimney.

It is for gas fires only.  I wouldn't start putting wood in there!  As long as it is a gas fire, you will be fine.

ETA: Especially with a TV right there.  Wood fires would probably get too hot for electronics?

Agree with all the above.... also to ad, what a sweet setup. I would like to do that in a few years.

LP or natural gas fireplaces inside are Non-vented. I don't think an outside setup needs a chimney. Just don't throw any wood in there!

ETA beautiful home strat! Wood and stone are my favorite building materials. They never go out of style.

Thank you!! The back porch area is about 30x15 I'd guess.
