[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Help Identifying Inherited Old Shot Gun (lots of pics!)

This gun has absolutely NO identifying marks left on it. The metal is very pitted, but not especially rusted. My family estimates age at about 70 years.

Does anyone recognize this gun, or can anyone take an educated guess about the manufacturer?

Is there really, really, faint "Challenger" markings along the length of the bronze(i think) reciever? What gage is it?

I learned to duck hunt with a sawn off 20ga that looks exactly like that, sans pitting.

I took most everything apart. I took an oiled rag the highlight any markings anywhere. There is nothing that can be seen.

I believe that is a Champion. The markings would be on the side of the receiver. It looks in pretty rough shape. The one I have is in .410.

Its a Champion.

I have a 20 GA that looks exactly like it. Except its in better condition.

Pretty neat little guns, but if you try to restore it be advised the barrels were not blued.

I actually found a similiar shotgun while cleaning up an unused bedroom in an old farmhouse in Maine last year.

I posted pics here, and someone id'd it, even giving a link to a similiar one on Gunbroker.

Mine said EXCEL on the side, but the location of the pins, hardware, and style of hammer and lever
make me think they're in a similiar family.

The one on Gunbroker was going for around $75, so it's not a valuable item money-wise, but may
be to you emotionally. They were made in the early 1900's, for some reason I think they were
made in Fitchburg, Mass, where I believe there was an Iver Johnson plant.

Yes - Iver Johnson, I think they made the same gun for severaldifferent sellers.

Mine is the first gun I ever hunted with. So I will keep it. I see them at shows fairly regularly.

I have one that looks exactly like it- but no rib on the barrel/reciever. Its marked

Palmetto
Model 1

It has the same trigger guard, trigger, hammer and action lever- and the reciever looks identical.

This would be my guess (Ivor Johnson). I have one with a ring mechanism in front of the trigger which operates the action.The markings for mine are on the right side of the barrel.

Stevens is my guess, my dad has one that looks nearly identical
