It's available at a number of places online, but I paid a premium at a gunstore to get one in my pocket right now.

Mine is typically some relatively small traditional style knife — usually a whittler pattern, occassionally a congress style. Almost never do I carry anything tactical (though I own a couple).

For the past few weeks I've been carrying a celluloid handle whittler (three blades, big blade on one end, two small blades on the other, two back springs the big blade rides on both springs) that is marked Shapleigh's. Old school knife people know Shapleigh as a venerable old hardware line. This is no doubt a rip-off. It was one of James Parker's schemes in which he claimed to have found a bunch of NOS knives in Germany. While not genuine Shapleigh it's a nice enough knife, German made, carbon steel, small, handy and cheap. I think I paid about $25 on eBay.

I own more than 100 knives but I generally rotate out just 3 or 4 for everyday carry. Sometimes it's a German Eye brand Congress with yellow plastic scales. Sometimes it's a Boker Tree Brand Classic whittler. If I need a heavier blade I might carry a Spyderco. I also have a really nice old Gerber lockback sheath knife (brass with rosewood inlays) that I carry camping. It's a somewhat collectable knife but it had already seen a lot of use before it became collectable so I still use it.

But always, there's a knife in my pocket. Obviously, I don't carry these old school knives in anticipation of a knife fight. A knife is just a good basic tool that everyone should have on their person at all times. It always amazes me that even in the small relatively rural town where I live I seem to be the only person prepared when somebody has a package to open and asks, "anybody got a knife?"

I carry either a Benchmade 812SBT-LH (mini-AFCK, left handed liner lock) or a SOG Flash I.  I work in a hospital, so I have to keep is small for the sheeple.

The voyager series of knives are the toughest lockbacks around.  They take a good edge, they don't retain it like high dollar knives, but for the average of $50 or so, they are probably the best deal around for a hard use knife.  My VG is a super old model that did not come with a pocket clip, I had to put one on it myself.  It is like 10 years or so old I think and has seen lots of hard use.  It also doubles as a camp knife for doing kindling and cooking duties.

I like their tanto folders myself, they are quite useful.

Also, the looks you get when you clack one open are priceless.

I can't believe most of you only carry just one knife.

No-name made-in-China folder, recently sharpened, very nice.

Recently sharpened Old Timer, massive tear-drop blade.

Winchester multi-tool on belt.

No-name Swiss army knife.

Keychain folder with built-in LED light.

Small skeleton-frame Gerber folder in my jacket.

Genuine Swiss army knife with my knife engraved on it, sometimes on my belt.

Cheetah (bleah, it only cost three bucks) semi-serrated folder clipped to my back pocket.

And that's just what I carry on a regular basis. If I think I'm gonna need it, I also strap a Mossy Oak skinning knife (the ridiculously sharp and invulnerable one I posted about in SF; holy crap this thing's amazing) onto my belt.

Just wait till I get my CCW. I've already got three compact guns picked out.

Because they are illegal to carry in a lot of places, harder to conceal, etc.  I'd prefer a fixed blade myself, but it's not really legal for a working length one around here.

It's illegal to carry knives here without a specific reason (DEFINITLY NOT for self defence), and the cops have stop and search powers, so I carry a Leatherman Charge Ti. Much easier to justify.

By the way, which type of folder do you like - lockback, liner lock, Axis lock?

I like Axis (BM) and lockback. Not a big fan of the liner locks (except for Al Mar).

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Al Mar Sere 2000, or any Al Mar. Now THOSE are some fine knives.
