Syria protesters set Danish embassy ablaze over cartoon

By Rasha Elass

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Several thousand Syrian demonstrators set the Danish embassy on fire on Saturday to protest the printing by a Danish newspaper of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.

The fire badly damaged the embassy's building, a Reuters witness said, but fire engines later put it out. Protesters also threw stones at the building, shattering windows.

Chanting "God is Great," they stormed the embassy, burned the Danish flag and replaced it with another flag reading "No God but Allah, Mohammad is His Prophet."

BBC News 24 quoted Jorgen Nielsen, the representative of Danish Institute in Damascus, as saying the building was empty at the time because the protest was expected. The embassy was closed on Saturday.

"There were policemen there but it seems to have been a symbolic presence," he said.

A security official present at the scene said the building, located at the upscale Abou Remaneh area, also housed the Chilean and the Swedish embassy. He had no further details.

Cartoons published in a Danish newspaper and reprinted in several European publications, one depicting the Prophet Mohammad with a turban resembling a bomb, have caused uproar across the Muslim world.

Protestors were expected to march to the Norwegian embassy as well, witnesses said.

I don't wanna get this thread locked or anything but I can't help but make one simple observation. Apparently, a day in the middle east without violence is like a day without sunshine. Maybe I'm just cynical?

Here's an honest geniune question: Has the middle east EVER known real peace---even for a limited period of time???? Ever???? Again, perhaps I'm just cynical, but I think I already know the answer to my own question.

These people have been suckled on hatred their whole lives.  Combine that with a medieval mindset, profound ignorance, illiteracy, stupidity, etc., and it isn't very difficult to whip them into a murderous frenzy.  Somebody farts?  "Well, let's get a mob together and have a go at something.  If nothing else we'll trample a bunch of women to death and might get to burn some shit.  Might even get on TV.  Maybe.  Then Merle Hommed* will be pleased."
*Moe Hommed's cousin, from Southern Arabia.  The one that issues fatwahs with a twang.

Iran back in the 30's and 40's was a decent place.  We used to have military bases there incase the reds decided to invide to the mideast oil fields.

Sadly, I think that world leaders, especially in Europe, are terrified of having muslims in their countries riot like they did in France. I think they are absolutely horrified at the prospect.  And the events of the last few days prove them right - they should be scared into further inaction.

Those JBT's need to get some common sense and kick back with some beer and popcorn. If there was a Neo-Nazi vs. Jihadi riot, I'd tell the boys to standby, weapons ready, with snipers and binoculars, then  sweep up the survivors afterwards.

That's what I was thinking.   Maybe it should be re-released over there with the ending scene added on saying "Fuck with us and you too will see how we fight back"....  Of course, this will be right after the scene where the Marines open fire and all the dead bodies are in the court yard.  Just advertise it as a short movie where they attack an American embassy.  They will come in droves!!!!!!!!

A Danish citizen explains how this whole incident got started here.

An excerpt:

In September 2005, Jyllands Posten decided to publish 12 caricatures of the Muslim Prophet Muhammed, as a response to criticism of depictions of the Prophet in a book about his life. Several of the artists presented in that book did not want their names published along with it, for fear of retribution. The thinking  behind Jyllands Posten’s bold move, was to show support for the artists and to make a statement about free speech.

Since then a small delegation of Muslim religious leaders who reside in Denmark have been on a tour of various Muslim states in order to bring attention to this fairly straightforward case. Unfortunately they did not stop at the facts.

Disinformation was fabricated in order to characterize the Danish population and government as fiercely anti-Muslim. Several new drawings were added likening Muhammed to a pig, as well as statements to the effect that Danish citizens were under the impression that the Prophet was a violent pedophile.

Suddenly, a display of free speech had turned into blasphemous slander, which naturally enraged all of the Muslim world. Throughout all of this, several of the religious leaders responsible for the disinformation, had been feeding sweet words of reason to the Danish press with one hand and more disinformation to the Arab press with the other.

According to my cousin who lives in Ghent, Belgium, they tried there as well. The police squashed them early before they got up a head of steam. We think we have it bad with our illegals sucking on the .gov tit but European countries with their socialist programs are literally getting bankrupted by the "turks" (their generic term for middle easterners). Their illegals come in and apply for welfare benefits. In several German cities, Germans are a minority. I think it was in the news last year about one or two countries passing  laws trying to curtail middle eastern immigration. Here it is 900 years later and it looks like Europe will finally be assimilated. Europe is a powderkeg and the fuse is lit.

That looks like they are storming a church! There really is no way to deal with these people. They reproduce like rats and act like animals. Usually feelings cool down after time goes on. If they were normal, their tempers would have cooled down somewhat by now, but instead, they just get more and more angry with each passing day. All they want to do is to hate. I don't know why. I feel so helpless just sitting here and watching these pictures. I wish that I could have been there with a force and mowed the entire crowd down with machine guns.
