Illegals come into the US everyday and are required to get medical care by law. Now this pastor family from Belize needs urgent and help and they got  to pony up $250,000 for a visa.

This was mentioned in my church bulletin and this blurb has more info:

"

Can You Help?
Student Ministries will be accepting donations and selling hope bracelets at a ministry table in the Tower Entrance on Sunday January 22 and January 29 for Sullie Ku, daughter of Pastor Rafael Ku, Senior Pastor of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Belize. Sullie was recently diagnosed with leukemia. You may remember that Student Ministries took a missions trip there last summer where they performed a service missions project with MTW. For Sullie to receive a medical visa to come to the U.S. for treatment, they must raise $250,000 to guarantee coverage of medical expenses. To date, $27,000 has been raised through Trinity Presbyterian Church in Jackson, MS (1-601-977-0774). We hope you will consider making a donation to help support this family.

For more information, please contact Derrick Harris at [email protected]."

Unless he needs some really specialized treatment, why not ship him to Thailand?  The "medical tourism" international hospitals like Bumrungrad are as good as ordinary U.S. care and cost about a quarter as much.

That is covered under the EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act)--but for an Illegal to get a Bone Marrow/Stem Cell transplant, they would have to shell out a good bit of money also (same as for a Liver Transplant, etc.).  Unless things have changed--those are not considered emergency treatments.

Chemo/Stem Cell transplants are expensive (treatment, followup, labs, transfusion support).  $250k is probably a bit low unless everything goes very well.
