I used to think Carter was a complete idiot. However, after reading about him and even reading his stuff, I came to appreciate and respect the man. He is extremely intelligent, and anyone who states otherwise is very uninformed. I don't agree with all of his policies or his methods, but I will never make the mistake of thinking he was/is an idiot.

He didn't really even want to be president.

Yep. Watergate.

My parents voted for Jimmy, thinking it would be a good change. They haven't voted for a democrat since.

My mom (rest her soul) went to her grave regretting that vote. My father still doesn't talk about it. He hates Carter more than I do.

Carter may have been the worst prseident this country has had. He is certainly one of the worst ex-presidents of our country.

During his admisistration the economy sufferred,  we had highest gas pricing ever, we had Iran hostage crisis, we had Ramsey Clark as Attorney General, we had Billy Carter lobbist for Libia, etc, etc, etc.

Since leaving office he has continued to bad mouth our country.

I don't agree with Jimmy Carter's positions on things... particularly foreign policy. Nobody could ever be pro-Israel and simultaneously agree with Carter's policies in the Middle East. I find his views to be somewhat of a paradox in consideration of his devout Christian beliefs.

However, Carter does have a keen understanding of the sociological attributes of the region. He certainly understands the Palestinian conflict, and the historical basis by which it was created (thanks again Great Britain/UN).

His statements this morning about continuing to fund the Palestinians even though Hamas has taken power via democratic vote, is based upon his opinions about the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people.... a la... we were providing aid to the Palestinian people, Hamas took power by a democratic process, and cutting financial aid would only pour fuel onto an already burning fire.

I don't necessarily agree with his assessments, but like you respectfully disagreed with me, I can continue to disagree with him, but also respect his opinions.

I started reading his book "Our Endangered Values". It made me ill. It's so amazing to me that some folks can be Christians and believe what they do politically. His equivocating on abortion was the clincher for me to set the book down.

malaise. post vietnam, post watergate malaise. carter is highly intelligent and highly moral but he lacked common sense, political saavy, and backbone. he was mahatma gandhi in a world that needed cowboys. he's done nothing but good deeds since he left; sometimes befuddled and addlebrained, but well-intentioned.

I think a lot of Jimmy Carter's problems he had while president could be attributed to the fact he was a christian and tried to live as a christian.  His presidentil stint could be labeled "turn the other cheek".  Which he did on everything.

I was coming out of college while he was president, and can tell you that the prospects of finding a job were pretty slim.  His sorry economic policies really crippled this country, and his foreign policies made us the laughing stock of the world.

If you want an example of the apple not falling far from the tree, google Amy Carter.  What a loon.  And an ugly one at that.

The GOP nominated Ford instead of Reagan in 1976.  They realized their mistake almost instantly when Reagan gave an incredible concession speech and Ford gave a pathetic acceptance speech. That's the main reason Carter won.

Different era back then. Notice all the southern states voting D. The south spent the 80's and 90's shifting to the R column, while CA and the far west shifted blue.

Carter was elected because of Watergate, and even then he didn't win by much.

Reagan very nearly carried the Republican nominaton. It would have been fun to have him as president during Iran.

Good question.

To answer accurately, we must go back to before Mr. Peanut became president.

The Vietnam War had all but split the country.  Nixon was partly a knee-jerk reaction to the corrupt LBJ administration.  Nixon, as we know, was just as corrupt but he got caught.

All around us were the huge changes in our culture, led by the Left.  Sex, drugs and Rock & Roll (Or at least disco.) were all the rage.  We were truly headed to total control by our lefty leaders.

The Cold War was raging and our Left wanted to play nice with The Bear rather than confront Ivan.  Not surprising since they viewed the United States as a peer to the USSR and believed that we were essentially alike...if not worse than the Boyz in the Kremlin.

We had only one media...Liberal media.  The Fairness Doctrine was still in force.  Conservative speech and writings were considered aberrant behavior.  Although Conservatism was on the rise, the process was taking some time because of the heavy influence of the media and academia.  Since the election of 1968, Socialism had been on the rise in America and the pendulum was only starting to swing back.  The signs were everywhere and the effects were felt in the 1976 election.  Carter was and remains a flaming lib.  His election was not all that surprising.

We were ready for a change in 1976 and we were ready again four years later.

Too many people couldn't forgive Ford for pardoning Nixon.

Having served my first stint of active duty from 1/76 to 1/80 I can assure you that he and all his foreign policy experts were complete and utter losers and idiots.  He had no leadership skills and he couldn't even get continuing resolutions out of Congress for the budgets.  Which meant that the military and other fed employees several times went without pay for a few cycles  a few years in his administration.

In 1976 disco was considered great music. Free sex and bell-bottom jeans were tolerable because there was no AIDS though there were some unexplained deaths. We were racially integrated . Incomes were rising (even though heavily discounted for inflation) and the war was over in Vietnam. We owned Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Of course the Ayatollah Khomeni was plotting his return to Iran in 1976. His return sparked the resurgence of islamic militancy in the middle East. If Carter was such a tuned in guy he missed that completely.

Wow, I'm no big fan of Jimmy Carter but I don't hate him. I think those who say he hates America are a little off base since he served honorably as a nuclear sub commander and was our president. He may not have been the best but far from the worst if judged by anyone who has even the barest grasp of american history. By believing in integrity and honesty he set himself up for failure. Now when I think in terms of a crappy president I think of a guy who started a war without much of a clear idea as to why and how to finish it. Someone who has happened to make all his cronies in the oil industry rich and has a vp who "used" to own a company that went as far as to serve unhealthy water to our troops. This "great" pres. is responsible for the deaths of who knows how many u.s. troops as well as Iraqi and Afghan civilians. It's no wonder they have to be told how great it is to be free when thier fucking house just got blown up because it was in the wrong neighborhood. As far as what JC has done for America since he left office I think the words respected statesman come to mind. I love America and have two great friends who are active duty military and have been deployed to Iraq twice. I embrace our political process and vote in every election. Most everything else is just opinion. As an amateur historian its my opinio that Jimmy Carter was far from Americas worst president.

i'm from georgia. and basically convervative as are most southerners. voted for carter and as a georgian was proud to see him win....

was the worst pres in my lifetime (worse than nixon who was pretty bad).

why did he  get elected:

1. smart
2. served on nuclear subs.. how could such a guy NOT be a hawk?
3. conservative basically in the old dixiecrat way (or so it seemed).
4. not a watergate guy.. not a washington insider....

for many years after he left he was considered the best ex-pres ever.... but has since become i believe the worse living ex-pres in my lifetime...

you just never know...

oh.. and i believe our current probs with mustlims and the middle east really started with iran, the iranian hostage (444 happy days) crisis and carter and the nation basically a deer in the headlights. muslim maniacs took notice of our willingness to grovel and we have been paying the price ever since. if we go to war somehow with iran, it will be partially because of that legacy. if we had nipped it in the bud, so to speak and taken the chance with the hostages we would be in a better position today...

ask yourself this... what would the ruskies have done??
