(more specifically, lat=34.9535, lon=-117.8839)

my one roommate said the cia said they stopped flying the sr-71s anymore because they are too expensive.

so why would they just be sitting out in the open near runway access?

There are two sitting near a runway at Palmdale, too.

Probably cheaper to leave them than to move them, although Srs were at Beale, IIRC, not March, which was a SAC base.

Hey, what's that huge numerical dial thing in the ground? Looks like it's carved in to the earth.

Also, if you scroll south and slightly to the east, looks like a Raptor on the tarmac. (near the 1st building with a red roof to the south)

Hey, what's that huge numerical dial thing in the ground? Looks like it's carved in to the earth.

Also, if you scroll south and slightly to the east, looks like a Raptor on the tarmac. (near the 1st building with a red roof to the south)

Didnt see the image, but it sounds like you are describing the pad where they calibrate the compass and stuff in a helicopter.

I haven't checked it out, but:
-the pics are very likely to be several years old
-the "dial thingy" is most likely a compass rose; they are used to calibrate aircraft compasses while they are mounted in the aircraft (one of my many duties in the Marines)

Don't know why they have them out like that. My question is whats with all the weird markings around there? Giant compass rose and runways that look drawn into the ground? And whats with the strange looking plane off to the SE? Looks like it has two sets of main wings and a tail set back on booms? WTF is that thing? It's at 34.5625 117.5325. 3 B1's sitting just to the NW. Some F22s sitting out at 34.5625 117.5325. And finally. What are these? 34.5736 117.5249 Look almost like Jedi Star Fighters from Star Wars.

And that plane just to the east of it looks like a Tornado. Doesn't Jerry keep some Tornados in the US now?

Germans have always had tornados in the US AFAIK, F-4's in US markings to...

Are you sure you are looking at March AFB?
I only see the (1) SR-71 across the runway at the museum.
Also, how do you enter digital grid #'s?
The museum is at 33 53 02.30 / 117 15 58.47

There's certainly a museum at March.

The photo showing the gooney bird is a part of the museum.

The 2 SRs, however, are not part of that area of the base.

I think there are still a half-dozen in service, and like three or four of those flying -- All belong to NASA, Edwards based.

That's the story I recall -- Your mileage may fluctuate.

You're looking at Edwards AFB and these pictures are of part of the base's museum aircraft. And the pictures are at least 3-4 years old becuse there are some structures that were built while I was there that are not showing up.

This is a shot of the NASA compound at Edwards. The SR-71s in this shot have been disassembled and hauled off to a couple of museums; the other two aircraft are a F-15 and a F-18 that belong to NASA.

The pics of my area (springfield, IL) aren't detailed enough to tell if my house is there or not. But I do know that the pics are several years old.

When I worked onto the image, the location was Riverside, CA exactly where March ARB is.

This is the first time I've ever used Google Earth. Is it common for them to do that.

You are looking at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards AFB, not March AFB.

The Model 133-4.62 Advanced Technology Tactical Transport (ATTT) proof-of-concept demonstrator is a 62% scaled version of an airplane designed to challenging STOL and long range requirements. The initial flight test program consisted of 51 flights with the original cruciform tail configuration, measuring and refining performance, stability and control, and handling qualities. The results of the fabrication and test program were presented in a comprehensive report to DARPA .

In an effort to improve the aft loading capability of the aircraft and to correct aerodynamic deficiencies discovered during the test program, the ATTT aircraft was modified with a twin-boom tail whose general configuration was similar to that of the Rockwell OV-10 Bronco. This modified configuration is shown in the accompanying photograph. Pratt and Whitney of Canada PT6A-135A turboprop engines were attached to the twin booms in a tractor configuration. A simple fully mechanical flight control system was installed, with full control available from both seats. The Scaled-designed landing gear is actuated using electric motors.

The M-133 demonstrator used a unique flap system to enable its STOL performance. The high lift configuration consists of eight Fowler-type flaps, each of 43% chord. The flap system was designed to allow the initial takeoff roll to be performed with the flaps extended, but at low deflections to minimize takeoff drag. As rotation speed was neared, the flaps were quickly rotated to the maximum lift position via a separate pilot action. The ATTT was a key program for Scaled. It demonstrated our ability to perform a challenging aerodynamic and structural design, and to build, test, and deliver what amounted to two different manned research airplanes, including all design and flight test data, to DARPA for less than 3 million dollars, including all recurring and nonrecurring costs.

The ATTT is currently in storage at the Air Force Flight Test Center Museum, at Edwards Air Force Base.

If you are looking at the west side of the runways at March, you are looking at the Air Museum. A B-52, at least one SR-71, a B-29 (or B-50) several 20,s, 25's, and 26's, 4 or 5 F-105's and so on. If you like planes and are coming to the LA area, it's worth a trip out there. (I live about 30 miles west of there)

Think I'll go try the Google Earth and check it out.

Oooh neat, just downloaded and tryed it. Oh Great, just what I need a nother neat toy for my computer.

Those coordinates are in fact up at Edwards. Just "Fly To" March, AFB and then scroll over to the west and a little south and you see the museum. I'ld be willing to bet that those photos are a few years old. Some of the March areas look like it was taken before the base was closed and transformed into the Joint Air Reserve Base.

Do a search in the military forum of keyhole. There is an overlay showing all the Blackbirds that have been found.

The ones you found are NASA planes.
