'Magnum P.I.' coming to big screen
Tuesday, January 24, 2006; Posted: 8:27 a.m. EST (13:27 GMT) LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Rawson Marshall Thurber ("Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story") has signed on to write and direct the big-screen adaptation of "Magnum P.I.," the 1980s series that made Tom Selleck a star. "Magnum P.I.," which ran on CBS from 1980 to 1988, followed the adventures of Thomas Magnum, a Navy intelligence officer-turned-private investigator hired by wealthy author and playboy Robin Masters to oversee security on the latter's massive Hawaii estate. Magnum lived in Masters' guest house and drove his Ferrari (the car would become one of the show's signatures), much to the chagrin of Jonathan Higgins III, a proper Englishman who ran the estate. Magnum also continued to take on cases in which he was aided and abetted by his Vietnam vet buddies, notably helicopter pilot T.C. and club manager Rick. Thurber is not making a spoof but rather something akin to the tone of the show, which mixed humor and danger. The story line for the Universal Pictures film sees Magnum, with the help of his former military pals, searching for a missing buddy. Features versions of such TV staples as "Charlie's Angels," "Dukes of Hazzard" and "Starsky and Hutch" have done well at the box office in recent years. Copyright 2006 Reuters. All rights reserved. |

10 bucks says they change his piece.....guessing either glock, beretta or a sig
Who will Hollyweird pick as the big screen Magnum? Charlie Sheen? Sean Penn? Eminem?
Sounds more like a cheesy thursday night late show movie that a feature film.
I am a big Magnum PI fan, but a Magnum movie sans Selleck is going to suck. HE was the show. |
I have the inside skinny on this............
Adam Sandler Another bomb from that center of creativity. The Real Deal |
Problably will be Collin Ferral (or however the fuck you spell his name)
Yeah, I won't see it....they should stick with the original cast, and whats happened with them over the last 20 years....and taking on some new case...
Sorry, this is gonna blow.... |
I will withhold judgement until the critics tell me what to think.
It will be a "new, hip, sensitive, in touch with his feminine side" Thomas Magnum and he will carry a taser. |
Without the original cast why bother? It wouldn't be Magnum without Selleck!
Miami Vice the movie will be a bomb, hopefully this will too, and maybe hollywood will actually start working on NEW ideas..........
I heard a while back that George "Commie" Clooney was one of the people up for the job. This is sickening, i can not believe they would do that to Thomas Magnum.
Hollywood: First they destroyed Jim West then they destroyed Starsky & Hutch But that wasn't enough, so they destoyed Sonny Crockett & Ricardo Tubbs ...& now they will destroy Thomas Magnum. What is happening to this world. |
Magnum P.I. without Tom Sellect would be like, well, Magnum P.I. without Tom Selleck.
I think Miami Vice will be good. It's directed by Michael Mann, who created the series, and directed Heat, Collateral, Last of the Mohicans, Manhunter, and The Insider. He is the master of cool action/drama and realistic gunplay. |
At least Mann is doing Miami Vice. Maybe this will force the original crew to make a new TV movie. |
They could always get Arnold Swartzenegger out of retirement.
I read somewhere that with the success of Brokeback Mountain they will probably make Magnum gay. Something about the whole deal of living as a house guest with robin masters and his relationship with higgens being a menage de trois.
How can it be about Vietnam vets, yet they have to get younger actors? Something is not right. |
The movie could be good if they get the right cast and don't make a spoof out of it.
Who'd make a good Magnum? Has to be someone that can look tough without being too intensely serious---Magnum was always something of a goof. Maybe Brendan Fraser? |
Where did it say it was about Vietnam vets? |
Firstly, come up with some decent farkin' ideas on your own.
Secondly, not everything that was a hit on 80s TV will translate into a good movie, despite what Hollywood seems to think these days. And hollywood wonders why we don't go to the movies anymore. |
It probably won't bomb. It will probably be full of nekkid chicks and swear words, so the pubescent lackeys who like hearing howard stern spank strippers will go see it. |
+1. Except for the bit about being Vietnam vets. Unless they set the movie back in the early '80s again, it wouldn't fly. The fact that Selleck and the original cast members are not going to be used in their former roles leaves me thinking this film will be a huge disappointment. |
I doubt they'll be Vietnam vets. Probably Gulf War or maybe even Afghanistan/Iraq vets. |
My first thought too. Hollywood will tweak the plot of the series a bit. The two main themes will be Rick and Higgin's fobidden love, and TC's revenge for the racial descrimination he suffered under Magnum's command in Iraq. |
Without Selleck they may as well use Jude Law. Higgins will be black. His car will be something goofy like a Hummer. They'll have some sort of female pop tart for his on again, off again love interest. The dogs will be Bichons, and it will be about fighting a large corporation who is polluting the coral reef.
It'll just plain suck. |
Nooooooooo, not "The Lad's" they have to be Dobermans. Poor Zeus & Apollo. |
It would have beeen great if it was being directed by Donald P. Bellisario, he's a very conservative, pro-gun person. Too bad they're going to shit all over his series.
Unless I see something in the trailer that just screams "They got it right!" I will make it a point not to see it.
About the only thing I can think of that would make it mildly interesting is if they have Tom Selleck play Robin Masters. |

Magnum P.I. (1980) (TV)
The movie would not have the same look and feel as the original TV series starring Tom Selleck, John Hillerman(Jonathan Quayle Higgins III), Roger E. Mosley(Theodore 'T.C.' Calvin), Larry Manetti(Orville 'Rick' Wright), even thought they are much much older. If they are going to have a Magnum PI reunion better make it soon because John Hillerman(Jonathan Quayle Higgins III) is already 75. All of these people created their roles and Magnum PI of what it is today or 26 years ago. |
Magnum P. I. without Tom Selleck?
That is an impossibility. There IS no Magnum w/o Selleck. Can't happen...no way. Dumb idea... |
I heard they were re-doing C.H.I.P.s next. Good lord - come up with an original idea. They all wonder why no one goes to the movies anymore.
Not to mention the dogs. |
This is a disgrace. Ill bet my AR that Hollywood will eff this up. Cuba Gooding will probably play Magnum. He will be a homosexual vegitarian HIV positive and armed with a Lady Smith. He will probably drive a Mini Cooper
I am worried they will fuck this up too, but some of you guys are just plain overreacting.
