I have in my possession a brochure recruiting folks for Army ROTC.  It is entitled "ROTC: Responde a tus preguntas." The entire thing is in Spanish.  It even has quotes from GEN Colin Powell and Lou Holtz about how ROTC helped them.  It's a helluva thing to see Lou Holtz titled as ex Entrenador en Jefe de Futbol Americano, Universidad de Notre Dame.

Is anyone else bothered by this?  If someone can't speaka da Ingles, I don't want them even in the Army, much less an officer.

I think it's total, complete and utter BULL SHIT!

If you can't communicate in FUCKING ENGLISH then you have no business being in ANY part of the Armed Forces of the United States.

More horsehit pandering from the assholes that are eagerly destroying this nation.

AFAIK there are at least 2 schools that folks that dont know our language can attend prior to attending Basic Training.  For Active Duty and Reserves its at IIRC Goodfellow AFB.  National Guard folks go to the PRANGLI English Language School at Ft Allen, Ponce PR.  Back in the early 90s the PR school also taught a really good Intensive Spanish course.  After 2 months of training I was a 3/3/3 in spanish, something that the Bragg 4 month Spanish course could never come close to.

While the occasional troopie ends up at perm party not able to communicate, there is no way that an Officer would make it thru OBC without being able to spreken de Engrish.

The recuriting phamplet is nothing more than that, a recruting device in the target language of the target audience, carefully researched and put together to influence members of the target auidence to join our military and serve their country.

I remember an Army language camp being at Lackland AFB, TX.

As I understood, they had to learn english before they went to basic?

I dont see a problem with it. At least they are SERVING for the opportunity to learn english and a shot at a better life.

I've had guys from the Puerto Rican Army Guard in a couple of NCOES schools. Both had problems in the course, particularly the oral presentation parts, because of their linguistic limitations. IIRC, neither one graduated from the respective courses they were enrolled in. At the time they told me that back in Puerto Rico they generally speak English for what you might think of as "official" purposes during the training...radio transmissions, etc,. but lapse back to Spanish for almost all other communication between each other, which sort of made sense because thats their day-to-day language.

I don't have a problem with a flier being in Spanish as long as the Soldier is squared away once they get out of Basic and into their unit.

I would not want to be squadded with someone who didn't speak English fluently, especially under stress.
Plus it's bad for unit cohesion when you have a couple people conversing in a language that the rest of the unit doesn't know.

This echos my thoughts on the matter.  If you don't speak (or hardly speak) English it's going to be a bitch when things get hairy.

I understand that there are non-citizens (both legal and illegal) that have served and are serving in the Armed Forces.  While I don't like the idea that an illegal could get in, it says a hell of a lot about the persons character that they would do that.

The idea of what I see as pandering still remains.  I don't care what sugar coated PC you cover it with, this is STILL PC at its core.

Turn the tables.  You're in Germany, or France or Poland and can't communicate in German, French or Polish, how far do you think those nations would bend over to accommodate YOU in their Armed Forces (especially if you were not in the country legally)?

I hope I'm wrong. I probably am since I've just seen evidence of it in newsclippings here and there.

But I think there is a program for illegal aliens that once they've enlisted or completed their enlistment they get citizenship status.

Correct me if Im wrong please. But don't just cry BS. Of course I realize the nearly impossible task of refuting something that doesn't exits.

I hope I'm wrong, because it's f'n bullshit.

Back to this post about an all spanish recruting drive. WTF!!! English is the unofficial language of our country. Spanish is the official language of our invaders from mexico, central, and south america.

I don't see a big need for spanish speaking soldiers. Looks like another f'n waste of money driven not by mission requirements but by the gods of diversity.

Same thing as the recruitment drive in urban city centers posted here a few yers ago. Seems the Special Forces (i forget the exact unit so it might have been Green Berets or Rangers) were not diverse enough. So something needed to be done so a lot of money was spent on targeted recruitment markets.

F'n diversity rules, regulations, and laws.

There is not, you'll need to be a legal resident alien to enter the US armed forces. The US armed forces will not help you to get a green card, but if you sign up I believe that you will speed up the process to become an american citizen.

And we all know that all native born citizens speak english as a first language right?

WRONG!  Never mind Puerto Rico, My wifes cousin was born here, left the country when she was 4 years old, just moved in with us last month.  She could run for president in 15 years, but speaks very little english, yet has had a blue passport her whole life.

Dont get me wrong, I hate illegal immigration as much, if not more than anyone else around here.  After I got married I ran my wifes immigration paperwork the proper way, and we spent a bit of time apart because of it, she is still discriminated against every day by people who think she is illegal.

Spanish aint going away.

Now you know what it was like for Native Americans so many years ago.  All them dam english speaking white folks invading our homeland.

Edited cause I have moments of not being able to sprken de engrish after 15 years in Latin America

You can't join the military if you are an illegal.  You can be a LEGAL alien and join and that gives you a faster method of becoming a citizen.

You have to be able to speak English to be in the military.

I'd rather have someone who is learning English in a foxhole next to me than... well I guess I never have to worry about being in one with some of you high speed internet heroes now do I?  At least the ones responding to those recruiting pamphlets are willing to serve.

+1

Legal aliens who join the American military are doing more service for thier adopted country than most Americans do in their entire life. They deserve to become citizens, as they have earned it IMHO.

It is not just Latinos either . I can count five different Filipinos in town that went this route with citizenship one dating all the way back to WWII .

Good for them.  Thanks for their service.  However, didn't we expect them to speak English fluently?  Especially if they are officers?

Look at a picture of the cemeteries at Normandy from all the soldiers who died during the D-Day invasion.  Every one of those crosses is there because a soldier died trying to obey an order an officer gave them.  Imagine how many more there would be if the officer didn't speak fluent english.

We have Spanish ads for the Alabama National Guard and the Army Reserve here in North Alabama. I have seen them several times over the last few months. We thought the S.A.P. feature was turned on the TV at first. When we realized that it was really being brodcasted in Spanish I thought I was going to puke I was so pissed.

Whole bunch of Indian leaders said the same thing.

So you just have to decide what your going to do, adapt, overcome or be left in the dust and end up on a reservation for non bilingual folks drinking yourself to death talking about the old days, eating govt supplied food, living in substandard govt housing ect ect ect.

Perhaps you will get some sort of tax break, like not having to pay taxes on tobacco and gasoline, or have a casino.

1.)  A lot of those pamphlets are to show parents what you're interested in.

2.)   If somebody wants to earn their citizenship the hard way by serving their country, I'm all for it.
