I know, I know... how dare someone say that shit on AR15.com lol...

I've been thinking about shooting some iron sights lately and getting maybe an old .30 carbine or something... What are some cool rifles that are pretty affordable and easy to get ammo for? Anything from oldschool military to new/modern.  Anything except for .22 LR...  Need recommendations.

I kinda feel like if I get into another rifle, I'll spend less money because it won't need a ton of ammo and enticing rails and gadgets to bolt on..... probably not even need optics

You can't go wrong with an M1 carbine. They are small and light, fairly accurate, and the lack of recoil makes them a fun all-day shooter (if you can afford that much ammo).

According to Texas/Dallas SWAT the SKS and AK47 are the 'deadliest weapons in the world' so I would run out and pick up one of those. I mean both.

leverguns and break open single shots.  I have so much damn fun with them.  Get 2 break open shot gun.22 combo guns and race a friend to see who can shoot faster.  I do not know why, but I have so much fun with break opens.

Lever/pump guns too.  I guess being more involved in the working of the gun's action adds to the fun factor for me.

M1 Carbines are fun, but the ammo can be a bit pricier.

Yugo SKS's are cheap (~$200 or so for best condition) and ammo is reasonable. They'd be my first choice.

If you don't own a Keltec Sub-2000,  you can buy one in 9mm or .40 for around $299.

Get one that uses the same mags as whatever pistol you own.  They make them for Sig, Glock 17,19, and 22, S&W, and Beretta mags.

They're light, can be shot without hearing protection comfortably, and use cheap handgun ammo. The longer barrel increases muzzle energy making the bullet have better ballistics much further out than handgun length barrels.

Plus they're concealable as they fold in half, and can shoot HP ammo with no issues, and they're made in Florida.

Their only downside is a very heavy trigger pull, but that improves after 300-500 rounds.

An old milsurp rifle.  I love my Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk.2, and plan on getting a No.1 Mk.3 sometime in the near future.  Really fun, pretty cheap, but ammo is almost as expensive as .30-06.
I imagine that an SKS or a Mosin-Nagant would be your best bet as far as cheap gun, cheap ammo and fun factor.

Ruger PC9- but only after it has a trigger job. Kind of like a cross between a 10/22, and an M1 Carbine, with the cost of ammo split right down the middle.

Yugo SKS 59/66 (arsenal rebuilt and unissued condition). They are readily available at most any gun-show: $185

1000 rounds of Wolfe 7.62x39mm ammo: $115

I can't imagine anymore fun for $300 or less.

M1 Carbine---they're fun and cute---kind of like a .22 on steroids.  There are some comments about the Garand, but, I've never thought of it as 'fun to shoot'----lots of power, but kind of like dragging around an 8 X 8.

Another one---a Thompson Submacinegun----now that's fun!!

The Friday before the new year I got to go shoot some class 3 stuff (krinkov, hk mp5k, m16/m4) and was also able to shoot a garand.
THAT was cooler (in a sense) than the fully auto stuff!

I agree, operating the action adds to the fun and slows down consumption rate of ammo, allowing you to shoot longer, albeit with less shots downrange.
