+1. One of the ones based on a true story. 3/187 Infantry (the Iron Rakkassans). We Were Soldiers also very good. The Boot Camp portion of Full Metal Jacket, after that it got a bit generic. The Green Berets |

+what ever we are up to now |

One of the sergeants at my ROTC unit was there and said the movie was very realistic. |

They all pale against the Ken Wahl/Cheryl Ladd epic Purple Hearts
Actually that flick really wasn't half bad. I seem to remember that the assault on the firebase was well done. Even had Gunny in it. |

Why is that? |

+2 My mother lost 2 cousins in the span of a few days (I guess they'd be 2nd uncles to me) on Hill 937 |

The Siege of Firebase Gloria was definitely one of the better ones. it by far had the highest bodycount of any vietnam war movie ever
|
|
Bat 21 was good, but not as good as Hamburger Hill.
Also, weren't the Missing in Action movies in Vietnam? |
|
You have no taste in movies. |

Of your choices, "Platoon Leader".
I would say: **We Were Soldiers **Platoon Platoon Leader Hamburger Hill in that order if it were my poll I didn't care for Full Metal Jacket, Deer Hunter, or Apocalypse Now. Seige of Firebase Gloria was okay. ** far superior to all the rest |
|
Maybe I am not the one with no taste. A Pack of Lips Now was awful. Both movies portrayed those who served over there in a very negative light. Typical Hollywierd. |

and for something completely different...
THE ODD ANGRY SHOT (Australian SAS in Vietnam) Odd Angry Shot - IMDB |

Apocalypse Now is anything BUT a Vietnam movie. It's a fucked up story SET in Vietnam. |

+1. I move you kill this thread and start over. |

The Green Berets had John Wayne and Sulu in it, so it gets my vote.
Peterson! Peterson! Where is my Peterson? |

We Were Soldiers hands down. It has a few small errors, but it is about as good as it gets for a Hollywood Vietnam movie. FWIW, one of my good friends is a retired Army Colonel who spent his entire career in infantry and special forces. He served 3 combat tours in Vietnam. He says WWS is the most accurate film yet, and he has seen pretty much all the movies mentioned so far.

I wasn't in Viet Nam. I turned 18 in 1975. The draft was over before I was eligible and I never joined. I have no first hand experience of military life, and certainly not of military combat.
Full Metal Jacket is memorable because of the boot camp stuff. The rest is politics. I urge you to check out Jack Webb's 1957 The D.I.. I like Webb. Apocalypse Now goes seriously downhill once we have to listen to Marlon Brando mumble and blather like he's nearing brain death. The movie seems fake and arty to me. Like it's trying to make a political comment against war rather than showing what men in war experience. The scenes are composed to mean something symbolic and "deep", not to portray something about the characters or how they interact. I like We Were Soldiers Once and Young. It's odd, though, seeing the sniper from Band of Brothers as a photo journalist. I like Platoon. I like the tension and crispness of it: "Why do we always have to go on fucking ambush?" I saw some of these others mentioned so long ago I have no clear memory of them, so I'll withhold comments. GL |

WTF was that? I have always wondered. |

+1 FMJ is my favorite. |

No contest, We were soldiers is the best 'Nam movie.
I liked Apocalypse Now, but wtf is up with that surfing part? Did they really surf in Vietnam or was that a bunch of BS, i think it was. |

Whatever you do, don't ask Charlie, he wouldn't know. |
|
|
So nobody here liked Casualties of War with Sean Penn and Michael J Fox????
Siege of Firebase Gloria and The Green Berets were my favorites. |
|
How about "A Bright Shining Lie"?
It is an excellent movie based on a true story. |
|
Jacob's Ladder, although it has been 10 years since I have seen it.
Firebase Gloria was a masterpiece in my book. Ermey overcame and survived. |
|
Yhat crazy ass sgt. with the shotgun reminds me of some other crazy ass with a shotgun I used to know. |

As unpopular as the choice seems to be here , We Were Soldiers is by far my favorite.
