I agree, but the other way around.

Apocalypse Now comes in third.

FMJ and A Pack of Lips Now, starring Martin fucking Sheen, were total bullshit.

Maybe you should stick to the history channel.

That would be my vote, only it isn't in the poll.

+1.  One of the ones based on a true story. 3/187 Infantry (the Iron Rakkassans).

We Were Soldiers also very good.
The Boot Camp portion of Full Metal Jacket, after that it got a bit generic.

Actually that flick really wasn't half bad.
I seem to remember that the assault on the firebase was well done.
Even had Gunny in it.

Of your choices, "Platoon Leader".

I would say:

**We Were Soldiers
**Platoon
Platoon Leader
Hamburger Hill

in that order if it were my poll

I didn't care for Full Metal Jacket, Deer Hunter, or Apocalypse Now.

Seige of Firebase Gloria was okay.

** far superior to all the rest

Maybe I am not the one with no taste.  A Pack of Lips Now was awful.  Both movies portrayed those who served over there in a very negative light.

Typical Hollywierd.

We Were Soldiers hands down. It has a few small errors, but it is about as good as it gets for a Hollywood Vietnam movie. FWIW, one of my good friends is a retired Army Colonel who spent his entire career in infantry and special forces. He served 3 combat tours in Vietnam. He says WWS is the most accurate film yet, and he has seen pretty much all the movies mentioned so far.

I wasn't in Viet Nam. I turned 18 in 1975. The draft was over before I was eligible and I never joined. I have no first hand experience of military life, and certainly not of military combat.

Full Metal Jacket is memorable because of the boot camp stuff. The rest is politics. I urge you to check out Jack Webb's 1957 The D.I.. I like Webb.

Apocalypse Now goes seriously downhill once we have to listen to Marlon Brando mumble and blather like he's nearing brain death. The movie seems fake and arty to me. Like it's trying to make a political comment against war rather than showing what men in war experience. The scenes are composed to mean something symbolic and "deep", not to portray something about the characters or how they interact.

I like We Were Soldiers Once and Young. It's odd, though, seeing the sniper from Band of Brothers as a photo journalist. I like Platoon. I like the tension and crispness of it: "Why do we always have to go on fucking ambush?" I saw some of these others mentioned so long ago I have no clear memory of them, so I'll withhold comments.
