Wife and I went to a gun show today.
I had been keeping eyes open for a MAK-90 Sporter.
(sacrilege, I know. But for some reason I really like them)
Only two guys had them for sale, and their tables were right next to each other.
One guy had a price of $475. Typical.
The other had a price of $335 Okay, I'm interested.
Literally, the first thing I'm thinking is "what is wrong with it".
I'm looking it over, and strike up a conversation with the owner.
He says "There's another in the box over there, still sealed up. Take your pick, $335"
So I pull the magazine, work the action, look it over really good.
Clean as a whistle. Obviously never been fired. Wood is not beat up like so many
gun show rifles I've seen. The price tag said "new in box".
I can't see anything wrong with it.
I ask him why he wants $335 when the guy next to him is asking $475 for his.
He said "Cuz his is a Norinco and mine are Polytechnic".
He grabs the other guy's MAK-90 and shows me the Norinco star on the receiver.
Sure enough, the $335 gun didn't have the star.
I was sure that all MAK-90s were made by Norinco. Guess that shows what I know.
Then he pulls out the box from under the table.
He opened the box, and pulled out the typical styrofoam box you see with MAK-90s.
It is still sealed in it's original plastic bag.
He was just showing me that it had all of it's accessories.
But I noticed that it DID have the Norinco star on the receiver.
Okay, this guy is an idiot.
I look closer at the one that was on the table, and noticed that under the receiver
it was stamped "made by Norinco".
I thank him, and tell him I would think about it.
(I'm scared of buying guns from idiots)
As I'm walking away, my wife asks "was that a good price?"
I explained to her that I bought one in 1993 for $425. That was 13 years ago.
I have seen them recently as low as $400, but
never any less than that.
And since I was willing to pay $400, YES, it was a good price.
So she said "so get both".
I walked around a bit more to think about it, and went back and asked him if
he would take $600 for both of them. He seemed surprised.
He thought for a minute, and said he would take $625.
I came home with two NIB MAK-90s, $312.50 each.
He was a private owner, so no paperwork to fill out. (woo hoo!)
Not sure how "good" of a deal it was, but it seemed great at the time.
How do I nominate my wife for "best wife of the year"?
(she let me buy a Colt Delta Elite last Sunday)
www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=427892OH, and after I paid the man, he said that those were the last two that he had.
He said he bought 15 of them from a dealer that was closing his business "a while back".
(makes me wonder if he was tired of not selling them, so he lowered the price)
