I have been reading up a but in it, and am wondering how good they are in personal experience. Is the ammo worth the loot, or is a .22 mag just as good? IMHO, looks like a wicked roound, but just seems kinda spendy. Any opinions? FYI, I am not in the market at all, just seeking knowledge for future reference.....WAY in the future.

it doesn't cost that much more at my local gander mountain than .22 LR.....

their .17 HMR is cheap, their .22 LR is waaaayyyy too expensive.

In the experience of those posting, what does a box of 17 HMR go for, versus a box of .22 LR?

What kind of .22 ammo are you comparing to? I buy .22LR ammo made by Eley that's $13 a box, but I can get a brick of el-cheapo Remington for $10. Generally, you will pay $6-7 for a box of premium (Hornady) .17HMR at the gun shop.

If cost is an issue, you could step down to the .22HM2 which is the same bullet on a necked down CCI stinger case. Velocity drops 4-500fps, but like a .17HRM it's the closest thing to a squirrel Rail Gun you'll ever find.

Get beat around by the wind though..

I witnessed my brother ruin a perfectly good prairie dog with a .17 HMR at 310 yards. They are reliable killers of prairie dogs within 200 yards all day and are devastating on rattle snakes. They have almost no recoil and are very accurate. True, they are very light and susceptible to wind, but not any more than a .22. I always take my .17 prairie dog shooting in addition to a .223. They're great walking around rifles.

.17 HMR Hornady Vmax.......~ $9 per 20
.22 box of 500.....~$9 ( I dont remember what brand it is, but i know my roommate was getting like 500 rds for his Ruger 10/22 for 8 or 9 bucks and for that i was getting 20 rds.

The .17 was really fun to shoot.....But the bullet is easily deflected, so if your shooting in light windy conditions your going to have to adjust....When i bought mine, the guy told me, that even a blade of grass could deflect the .17 HMR.

I thought that .17 came in a box of 50. I have never seen rimefire in a box of 20. Must be good shit. Got a link?
