I was looking around on Gunbroker and came across this auction....
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=42495346
It looks like people are having sucessful experience with getting these demilled Thompsons from some guy in the Ukraine. It was my understanding that this stuff can't be brought back into the U.S. Any thoughts?

Looks like the barrel, bolt, and receiver are all rendered permanently inoperable...I don't see a problem...
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 12:48:57 PM EDT

If this wasn't demilled according to BATFE guidelines and they didn't witness it...I'm going to make a bet, there'll be someone that goes to jail.

If the reciever was once a machinegun, it has to be torch cut. Not just rendered inoperable.
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 12:53:19 PM EDT
buy one and tell them you will cut the receiver for them to save them the trouble as soon as you get it :)

It says for US bidders the receiver is cut

Ain't that a damn shame.

What a damn shame....it looks like many of these Thompsons coming out of Ukraine are in NEW condition. I just hope the guys winning these auctions don't get in trouble. Maybe the BATF doesn't see this sort of thing as a big deal, but I wouldn't bet my freedom on it.

BATF nailed some people on rewelded M14 receivers a few years ago. They caught it via a couple of 4473's which "just happened" to have been routinely reviewed. They got traced back to source, and then back down again to distributor and dealer, and the customer gets it in the end.

Price: $568.75

Seeing as though it was part of a LEND and LEASE program and they were most likely NEVER paid for, why aren't they obligated to freaking give them back to us?

DADDY NEEDS A NEW TOMMY GUN!

Yes I realize these aren't registered MGs... but if the '86 bill were overturned...
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 1:18:43 PM EDT
I got one of these but without any reciever parts last year. they truly are un-fired, I've never seen a parts kit in such mint condition. I don't see how they can import the barrels now though due to that arbitrary rule change by senior gonzalez that came into effect on the 1st.

As those are domestically produced prior to 68 they should be re imported and registered.

Wonder if a SOT could get one as a post sample.

I was looking at the indivduals who had won these auctions, and I recognized one of them was someone I had dealt with on Gunbroker a year or so ago. Their email adress was still in my address book. I sent them an email regarding the auction, and they said they had no trouble with the seller, got the Thompson shipped right to their home, and have had no problems or repercussions of any kind since. Just thought I would give you guys an update. It's just a shame we can't get all of our old Lend-Lease stuff sent back to the States.

Didn't I hear that C&R eligible rifles such as M1 Garands and M1 carbines were going to be allowed to be imported again?

I wonder if thay have some lend lease Garands around?

That's not fair. . .

Why is it these can't be converted to Semi-auto overseas and imported?

These aren't "sporting weapons" and "once a machine gun - always a machine gun"...

ETA:

Thank the BATF for that one...

and it sucks too, from the site:

MOST MACHINE GUNS CAN BE CONVERTED TO SEMI-AUTO FIRING ONLY AT A CHARGE OF £40 PER GUN WHERE POSSIBLE, WHERE SUCH WEAPONS ARE ALLOWED IN THE END USE COUNTRY.

That website hasn't been updated in nearly 2 years and when I went there, he didn't have any of the M16's listed.
I doubt he actually has much of that stuff anymore

Yes, most of those Thompsons have never even been fired! They were just put straight into store in 1942 and forgotten about.

ANdy

Paid for with US taxpayer $$! So much for Russia's desperate need.....

So you can't get an NFA stamp for a brand new M1928 Tommy Gun to bring it home to the US were it was made?..... strange law that.

ANdy

Nope, it has to have been in the country and registered before 1986...

Even if the gun is older than the BATF itself...

before 1968, GCA68 prohibits the import of "non sporting arms"

gun laws dont make sense
Link Posted: 1/21/2006 11:15:10 AM EDT
Great - if I am correct here - if it wasnt for this stupid 1986 law - we could SAVE these HISTORICAL PEICES OF HISTORY??

Maybe - THAT - should be an angle to work! At least ALTER the bill, so that antiques like this could be registered and bought! Its a step!

Not legal. Even if you toss the improperly (not torch cut in three places with each cut removing 1/4" of material), with the $500 purchase price, one violates the $100 and under import rule for minor parts.
