I say Van Haggar. Sure, the music was more artistic and slightly more sugary than the rockin' stuff that came before it, but I think Van Halen's body of work was better overall with Sammy Haggar than with David Lee Roth.

What say you?

Poll coming.

Haggar sucks.  Chuck Norris would chew him up, spit him out, and cheer for Diamond Dave.

I can't vote...

I liked them both. They were more consistent with Sammy though... But Women and Children First is probably my favorite VH album. OU812 is second.

I have a guilty admission... I didn't listen to Balance - AT ALL - until last year I picked it up on a whim and have listened to it literally dozens of times since then. It's a great album! Why did I wait? I thought it would suck. I was wrong.

Both are good.

You just have to understand it was a difference in maturity for the band.

Roth = Hormone soaked drinking fest with great music involved.

Hagar = Great music with hormone soaked drinking fest involved.

Not that I like VH or anything.

I love '80s music, just not them.
The best album Eddie VanHalen ever did, was Michael Jackson's "Thriller"

I still want to kick the shit out of Eddie Van Halen for destroying the greatest band of the 80's

Diamond Dave for sure. Hey, I love Sammy. But facts is facts - Van Halen was better with Dave, and Sammy was better with Montrose.

Diamond Dave for VH. There can be only one!

I never really cared for Sammy's music, but after hearing him talk on the radio for a while he struck me as a very likable person. He seemed rally "down to earth" and it made me think of him more as a person and not just some mindless chaotic head-banger.

That band with Sammy Haggarslacks isn't even Van Halen. Yes, I have the CD's. Yes, I've listened. Yes, its palatable. No, its not Van Halen.

And also, IMO, Eddie hasn't been the same player since he abandoned the variac'd, tube melting amp setups and his homebuilt guitars.

I've seen both live and Roth commanded the crowd while Haggar was still good, but in the same showman class.

I liked VH either way, but with Hagar just a little better.

Comparing their respective solo work?  Hagar, hands-down IMO.

(And it's Hagar with one "g" for crying out loud - Haggar is a clothing company!)

But these threads/polls never  go well for the Red Rocker...

I responded with David Lee Roth, but I don't think it was Roth that made that period better or that Haggar made them less great.

Something happened in the middle 80's to Eddie and he started to play a fookin synthesizer instead of weilding his ax.  You hear the wussification of Eddie on Jump on 1984.  I think he largely went downhill (with a few exceptions) after that.

Myabe he just wanted to make a lot of money with a more pop sound, but I never want to hear him play a synthesizer again.

Ditto that!  Van Halen never was the same after Dave, thier popularity and their music sank to mediocre.  I thought back in '95 or '96 that they were back on track, but they fucked Dave again.  Guitarists just don't get it, the lead singer makes it work, not the guitar solos alone.

After watching David Lee Roth stumble around on stage, forget the lyrics to the music, curse out the audiance, call some guys girlfriend names and make a complete ass of himself and Van Halen I say that David Lee Roth sucks donkey balls and licks goat ass.
He has ZERO musical talent, can't play the guitar or write his own music let along grow hair.
Sammy Hagar would go Chuck Norris on him 7 different ways till Tuesday, and would leave him crying Beach Boys copy tunes on the curb.

Van Halen with DLR was a kick-ass hard rocking band that did a couple of ghey cover tunes (Dancing in the Streets ).

Van Halen with the Red Rocker was a great band, but it was no Van Halen.

They should have called themselves a different name.

Han Haggar was better.

Diamond Dave is a no talent ass and the reasonably good songs VH had with him were covers anyway. DD's solo career was / is a joke. Saw him when he opened for Bad Company a few years ago and he sucked big time and he only did VH songs even though he was on " 2nd class tour " to promote his new solo album...

Early David Lee/Van Halen.
