'Jungle Love' from the Purple Rain Soundtrack (although it wasn't Prince it was Morris Day Time)
And 'Relax' Frankie Goes to Hollywood Both songs were HUGE in the EM club at Ft. Sam Houston in the summer of '85. |
I was just listening to Electric and Sonic Temple this weekend! The Cult was really good in their day. |
No way, man both were 80's Van Halen early 80's (jr high) G n R late 80's (high school) I graduated in 1989... "Appetite For Destruction" was released in 1987 "Lies" was in 1988 mrs |
I am posting before I read more.
Only one song says pure 80s to me: Van Halen's Jump (followed closely by Panama). |
yep, the police! all i could listen to was acid rock from the '60's cuz disco was king and it SUCKED!!! there was nothing else around...the police was like throwing a rope to a drowning man and it saved my sanity! plus, they were the cutting edge of punk and what's now become "alternative"...everything that followed! |
That album kept me sane through all the transvestite hairbands. |
the list of songs could go on forever, but one stands alone...
"just like heaven" by the cure. |
The wife and I both like the music but we can't stand Bono and the band... Bunch of socialist, tree huggers! |
A lotof good music from that era...high school, college, and the Army for me during that time, so lots of good memories to go with the tunes.....
A lot of good music has been referenced, so I'l throw at a new one Strength by the Alarm was a party fave back then. B-52's-RockLobster, Planet Claire, 10,000 Maniacs Loudness Accept Yes Missing Persons Motorhead Orchestral Manuvers in the Dark Dokken Night Ranger Dio-Sabbath/Dio BTW, GnR's first album came out in 1988 (I was at Ft Campbell at the time and we played that tape over and over and over....) GreatWhiteLionSnake.....well, i kind of hated the semi female hair bands, mostly. The New Wave/English bands you expected to be slightly faggy, but rockers should be masculine (except for Lita Ford). |
Beat me to it! Guns n' F'n Roses was the best band of the 1980's period. Followed closely by the Crue (NOT the CURE!!!), AC/DC, and Poison. |
Yep, pretty darn good. |
U2's I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
or............... Village People's Y.M.C.A. |
The Cure was pretty good too. |
GnR's first album came out in 1987, Tim. I was in my freshman year of college. All good groups, though. Cool thread. Brings me back. |
Right Now, Runnin with the Devil and Jump |
And I've always wondered who told Kris Kristofferson he could sing. But I do like the song. |
I also liked Huey Lewis and the News stuff....
HH ETA: How the HECK did I forget INXS? They were awesome! HH |
89. i remember an interview with jani lane, when he talked about the paradigm shift from hair bands to grunge. he mentioned that in the spring of '90, the first thing you saw when walking into the label office was a gigantic poster of warrant. 6 months later, it had been replaced by an alice in chains poster, and nobody from the label wanted to talk to the warrant guys. ahhh, the fickle market. |

+1,000,000,000 Awesome band |
You're right. They had a metric ton of good stuff. |
+1 There's so many songs to choose from... 80s = great era for music Just to name a few: Where the Streets Have No Name - U2 (great song... and great video, love how they just decided they'd get up on a rooftop in LA and shoot) You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC (now there's a way to start the 80s, definitely an 80s song) Rio - Duran Duran Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode(everyone knows this one) New Sensation - INXS (Ah, the old INXS) There's more, I just can't think of them right now... Some songs just trigger when you think "80s" too... |
Definately AC/DC's "Back in Black" YES the whole album! That was HUGE through the 80's.
U2's "Pride in the Name of Love" is an incredible song. One of my all time favorites. The part about MLK gives me chills everytime I here it. "They took your life........They could not take your pride". AWESOME! |
I vote for Walk Like an Egyptian by the Bangles but thats because it is a catchy song and Susanna Hoffs was and is smoking hot. The Phoebe Cates of rockers.
That said, most 80s music was pretty good. People actually wrote and performed their own songs then and were fairly creative if not always successful. Today's music is crap in comparison with little thought, imagination or tallent behind it. |
That is a greatalbum. |
NOW YOU GONE AND DONE IT.
x 1,000,000 It was actual music created by humans and musical instruments back then. Now, it's virtually all computer-derived mash. Many of today's "performers" can't play a single instrument or write music. |

Poison? POISON?!??! |
lol, OK, well, I knew it came out after I left school and went active, so it was between Sept 87 and Dec 88..... I remember when 10,000 Maniacs played the gym at URI. Hell I remember when Metallica played the West Warwick Civic Center, which is a little bigger than a high school gym......that would have been the Puppets tour. Rush, how could I forget them? Pat Travers, Genesis........Weird Al |
Agreed. Africa - Toto was pretty good, too |
I Love Rocky Road... |
+1 Bye Bye Love Just what I needed |
"70's dude |
Greatest 80's song ever? This one's easy for me:
Sister Christian by Night Ranger Followed closely by: Wouldn't it be Good by Nik Kershaw Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears Stranger by ELO People are People by Depeche Mode |
I love 80's era music. Lots of good stuff. My vote would be U2 "With or Without You" as one of the best.
I would have to say that AC/DC , METALICA, would take it but as for one perticular song ? That is not possable.
This would be in my top 10, but not number 1.
I'd have to think about it for a while to get a #1. Faithfully - by Journey others: Somebody's Watching Me - by Rockford Heat of Moment - by Asia Nightshift - by The Commodores Word Up - by Cameo Higher Love - by Steve Winwood Sexual Healing - by Marvin Gaye Who Can it Be Now - by Men at Work Down Under - by Men at Work |
1979! Doesn't count! Me, man, it's hard to think of just one song. I'd need a song for the many phases of kk7sm in the 80's. I'd need goth, punk, new wave, pop, weird college crap. But as far as a song about what I was doing in the 80's? "Wild Wild West" Escape Club, 1988 ETA: I'm a huge Cure fan - have an obscene amount of their paraphernalia. To the guy who likes Crue and Poison, you forgot Ratt. |
Parents just dont understand- The fresh prince and DJ jazzy jeff
Elvis Costello:
Trust and Imperial Bedroom , and don't forget, Specials madness PIL DEVO Numan Jam general public Stray Cats etc etc basically most of what you hear on XM radio 44 (fred) |

"Pistol in My Pocket" - Lana Pellay
Reminds me of chicks in skimpy leotards at aerobic classes in my youth hooting |
