Off road Segway video.

When I saw it, the first thing I though was airdroppable, fast, quiet way to get to the objective without humping and being too tired to fight effectively. Quick exfil. Maybe for SOCOM operations, covert stuff. can be laid down when concealment is needed. Put commo gear, med packs, whatever on it. Destroy on exfil.

At $5K a pop could easily be mission expendable.

Could increase the amount of gear they could haul.

Watch the video and tell me you think.

Off road Segway video

Any of you grunts that have had to hump 100 lbs plus for miles on end might appreciate this.

No.

At minimum it needs two wheels in tandem on each side in order to traverse holes in the ground.

Marketer's got to eat, too, I guess.

Range is 9-12 miles with a 260 lbs payload. For a quick in out operation and Hostage rescue exfil/might be useful.

The segway was a stupid overhyped failure of an idea. And they are still trying to maket it as more than a toy?

Its nothing more than a rascal scooter on which you can't sit.

Tandem wheels might also allow a bigger battery or fuel cell. I'm sure that could be developed with a gov't TDP. The hard parts, the Gyro and programable stabilization software, is already done.

Actually it is quite a success at what it does.

The problem with this

was that is takes up a lot more room on a C130.

I think the military can get the same benefit with less down side by getting bicycles.
I remember reading that troops on bicycles can cover three times more distance with twice the supply when on paved road than ones marching. Also, VC hauled a lot of their supplies to South Vietnam on bicycles along the Ho Chi Min Trail. Unfortunate th elast bicycle troops were Swiss and they were disbanded about 15 years ago.

OK maybe not so good an idea.

A Yamaha TW200 would be a more capable and less expensive option.

With a 4 wheeler you don't need either gyro or programmable stabilization. (Says the guy that hasn't rolled a vehicle yet. I'm sure there are some guys here that may think that they might be nice when 4 wheeling)

I could see some cute little AF or Navy Pie keeper tooling around the base with it while wearing a skirt.

I can see her now, she blonde,19 yo, 5.5", C cups with a cute face. Close your eye's so you can hear the wind whistling in one ear and out other as she speeds past grunts shouting their crude comments of love and devotion. She is smiling because the hot wind feel good as it blows up her skirt covering her pie with hot humid air. She's enjoying the steady as she speeds along to her barracks where her girlfriend awaits naked on her bunk.

Yup, I think the mil could use them.

With the exoskeletons only a few years away, not likely.

+1

It would be real useful to have a military vehicle that could be stopped by a 6 by 6 piece of timber.

A $5000 toy for people with more money than brains.

That was a very well thought out fantasy. I'm gonna go AFK now for a few minutes...

We use them in EOD for tranporting ourselves in bombsuits and our gear to a far away suspuct package or IED when a vehicle can't be used.

They are awesome, it sure beats walking a klick with an 80 pound suit and some tools.

no, maybe the San Francisco police.

That particular item? No. The technology does have a usage at some point in the future.

Seriously? Ah, now I don't feel so foolish for suggesting that!

Yep, sure enough found this pic of an EOD soldier in Iraq with his Segway (not in EOD gear).
Not the use I envisioned, but not useless as some of you suggested!

Thanks MattLethal for that info!

Also, this PDF file contains an article (Right click, save target as) that states that

"Segways are issued as standard equipment for Navy EOD teams..."
