OK fellow AR and AK shooters.
i had a bad day at the range today, me and a few friends head off to the range .
i got my new EOTech sight on and was sighting it in . (remember sighting in)

this old bastard decided i was shooting to fast with my EVIL black gun .
and was having around me and preceded to rip me a new on calling me a punk and I don't know what were doing .
then i told him i have been shooting from the age of 12 I'm now 35 and have a idea what I'm doing .
then he goes back to the guns i had today SKS and the AR and I'm a punk that's when i called him out on the idea that he just didn't like the black gun .
all the time yelling profanity at me how unsafe i was being , as he is standing on the firing line with out no eyes or ear protection.

I'm still pisses off about it 12 hours later
so i guess what I'm asking who else has had to deal with black gun discrimination and what did you do?

I will never, under any circumstance, shoot at a range.  I will give up shooting forever before I do so.

BLM and Forest Service land is your friend.

the one thing i can say if he was not such a prick i would have gladly let him shoot a mag from my AR.

Thats the problem with going to a range, you have to follow the range rules. If you were not rapid firing and just sighting in your scope he had no call to act like that. As to using profanity thats unprofessional. I find it hard to believe though that he started just calling you a punk if you are 35years old. There must be more to this story that you are not posting. Something else happened

it was the damn-est thing.

+1

Have always shot on a open public range.  No range Nazis, no bullshit and never had an issue with anyone I've encountered there.

Agree with adair_usmc, it would be a *VERY* cold day in Hell before I'd subject myself to what you (and many other people) have reported dealing with here.

You should have responded thusly:

"Listen, decrepit fuck. I find your diatribe to be far from amusing, and in fact rather tiresome. I find no humor in the fact that you choose to lecture me in the proper and safe operation of my firearm, as it is clear to me that the only thing you're qualified to operate is your mouth, and you do a poor job of that, at best. Now please piss off, before I am forced to dropkick you in the colostomy bag."

you boys need to come shoot at Knob Creek in Kentucky. The rules are clear and all about safety. pretty simple,
eyes and ears are optional
targets can be ANYTHING except glass and hazmat, saw some guys drag an old car out there Sat
follow the range masters calls for clears, or if no master call them yourself
treat all guns as loaded and on a clear, clear and open actions do not touch them ,
keep weapons pointed in a safe direction, down range or straight up
and that is pretty much it, FA is fine, bump firing is fine.
shoot from beside the table, not behind or in front of
all in all, safe, seen alot of dumbasses but I always say something if they violate the rules and have never had an issue.
I have seen a few people removed but I always knew they would as soon I saw them walk up to the tables to start shooting, normally it's 3-6 people with 1 gun between them, either some beat to shit sks or some junk pistol.

I use the range all the time.  But it is a Private range on Fish and Game land.  If anybody ever talked to me like that I'd just give them my name and say " Go see the board, and see what they have to say about it".  The board members love to see SEBR's on the range.  trying to get some young blood out there.

Went shooting at a range out side of Tallahassee, and when me and my friend pulled up their was a woman shooting at the pistol side of the range. I went down to talk to her about going cold etc; I noticed she was wearing a duty belt and when she turned around she had an ATF badge on her belt.

We started shooting our WWII era rifles (an M1 Carbine and a #5 Enfield) without a problem but as SOON as we uncased our AR's she started spewing of anout how "Civilians" have NO need for such a firearm and how dare we show up at a PUBLIC range to shoot such vile devices in the presence of an ATF agent(even though she could have gone to the LEO range at Pat Thomas) and how they should all be banned, and are child killing bullet hoses and how us peons shouldnt be able to get near one, etc; etc;

Had a similar situation a few years back, The guy was talking shit about how ARs were inaccurate spray and pray weapons.

Dropped into a prone position and let fly 10 rounds rapid, 2, mag swap,8 more.

He was shooting a scoped Weatherby at 100 yards, I was irons with my AR at TWO hundred...

Guess who had the tighter group?

Hmmm haven't heard of that. Usually, they're too good to even speak to people when they DO go to the public range. I gave that up in favor of the private range for $5 a month.

Back to the original issue. Was this old guy an official or employee of the range, or just another guy who happened to be there?

Yes, was it a "Range Nazi" or "Nazi at the range?"

That's a pain. A little weird though. Nope never had an issue where I go, but then again, I think most of the people have AR's or Ak's or both anyway. Matter of fact, they have CMP here every month for both M1's and Ar's. Here's the weird part, I'm in massholechusetts and your out in bumfuck nowhere and you get hassled.

[#26]
Redrider I'll add my $.02 worth. I HAVE to shoot at a public range here in the great socialist-thou-shalt-not-carry state of Maryland and make the following observations:

The range I shoot at is by far THE best deal going considering: $50 a year, unlimited shooting on 100yd range, shotgun (throw your own), 50 yard pistol and archery range. His and her porta potty to boot. Range officers are volunteers. In exchange for 40 hrs a year service, you get free membership.  There is a park ranger assigned duty at the range. So far so good right?

The range rules are well posted. Rate of fire not to exceed 1 round per second. No automatic weapons, nothing larger than .30 cal on the rifle range except muzzle loader and deer guns. All targets have to be over 3 feet off the ground. Mandatory breaks on the hr, 20 after, 40 after.

Despite all this I've seen yahoos show up with hanguns on the rifle range, ak's, ar's, big bores, etc. I've seen shitheels raining hot brass on everyone as fast as said fools can pull the trigger. Many of said asshats do NOT police their brass despite the presence of a free broom and brass bin. I've personally called out a couple of nitwits for unsafe operation, but not rate of fire. I've showed a couple of them how to pick up brass too. The roof over the benches are full of holes where assholes shoot it up etc. And yes, I called the ranger one time when a bunch of rednecks showed up with magnum handguns and proceeded to shoot the target holders on the pistol range. Their priviledges were revoked by the way.

All that said, unless the old guy you mention is demented (in which case you'd be a fool to confront him on a rifle range for obvious reasons) YOU or your buds probably did something to provoke the conversation aside from show up.
Was your hot brass hitting the man? Did you exceed rate of fire rules? I just feel theres more to this than you're letting on. Are your buds a bunch of jerks? Whats the deal?  Just curious....

I've never had this happen in my lifetime of shooting in 6 different states. Over 35 years of  black rifles.  Now, I HAVE had confrontations with unsafe idiots, but no one has ever slammed the rifle itself (Except for guys shooting Garands at service rifle matches when you beat them)

I call bs on the "ATF agent" as well.  It's so far out of character for ANY officer to spout personal opinions such as that in an unknown enviroment. This may come as a big surprise, but I have yet to come across an ATF agent that is against guns of ANY type.

I think I almost had a similar problem this weekend.  I was shooting my AR and my new to me M1A.  Anyways, I was shooting at boweling pins at 200 yards.  I had just finished a mag and knocked down the pin.  This guy walks up a little ways down from me looks at me and what I am shooting at, he has no guns or any thing.  So I just stare at him holding my ar, unloaded, locked back.  The guy on my right asks him if he needs to put up targets or anything, he says no and leaves.  It was weird.  This is a private range and I wasn't breaking any rules.  I don't know what his problem was couase he never said anything to me, but it pissed me off either way.  I made a mental note of his truck and him, I may ask him about it if I see him again.

The biggest problem with my range that drives me nuts(my backyard), is when my wife works a night shift and wants to sleep all day. Then I can't go out and shoot at all. It really chaps my ass. That, or when I'm out training, and everyone on the ridge shows up with guns, but we end up talking instead of shooting. I also hate it when the cows in the pasture to the left of the range bunch up by the fence. If my round riccochets it could hit them, and it makes me nervous. I don't want to pay for a stupid cow. If everyone(people down the ridge) is out deer hunting, and I'm stuck at home with the inlaws I can't shoot either, because everyone is back in the woods, and it scares the deer away. Oh, I almost forgot, everytime I shoot, my one dog has a panic attack for about an hour during and afterwards. I feel bad, but whadda'ya' gonna' do? One more, when my wife accidentally lets the dogs out while I'm shooting and I don't know about it, and my German Shepherd runs past me after I shoot my 1911, and tries to fetch the bullet.

I feel better now.

I almost forgot, I hate those stupid little flip up things on coffee lids. If you can't keep from spilling you shouldn't be drinking it.
Thanks.

I have not run into a discriminatory problem at a range, but stopped by a gun store on TN AL line in South Pittsburgh, TN and was looking for a chamber brush.  I asked about a 223 chamber brush and they asked what kind or rifle.  I said for an AR or mini 14.  Their comment is we only sell stuff for "hunting" rifles and not that kind of gun.  I told them in that case, they won't sell shit to me or any of my friends and walked out.  Too bad, because I had about 40 OBL targets I was going to buy there....

Yeah, my first response to someone who is curious about my EBR's is to offer to let them fire a few rounds.  Most people are more curious about them in my experience though.

And usually cops are some of the funnest guys to shoot with.  I know one local cop that will hand around his guns and ammo like candy and let everyone blaze away with them, after they've had the standard lecture on safe operation.

He also brings young people out to the range and teaches them about shooting.  Even kids he's met while "on duty".  I really admire him.  HE is a good example for both the shooting sports and law enforcement.

Ditto what that other guy said about the ATF though.  That "agent" (probably a pencil pusher in the back office) really needed a reminder about the ATF's mission.  I woulda gotten her badge number and called the local office to bitch about her attitude.  Never know, she is probably disliked by her co-workers and superiors as well if she's that big of a bitch.  Might give them "ammunition" to transfer her or something... he he he

Oh, and I definitely would have called that jackass out on his lack of ear and eye protection.  If he is that much of a nitwit I would have reported him to whoever was in charge of the range, both for harrassing you and for his disregard for safety gear.

I always bring a baggie of spare earplugs with me to the range, and anyone who shoots my guns has to wear glasses.

I've found it's good PR when the you're the guy with the EBR's and you're offering earplugs to people who are out shooting.

The ones that really tick me off are the guys who come out to "sight in" their shotguns (usually the bead-sighted variety) and drag their wife and their toddlers along with them, and not an ear plug in sight...

I usually take that time to tell them about how bad my hearing is because earplugs weren't "cool" when we went shooting when I was a kid...

I say go back with TWO black rifles with as much tactical gear attached as possible (borrow if necessary ).  Put one in EACH hand, EACH loaded with a Beta C mag, turn the fore-end lights on and shoot alternating SLOW fire .

Then set the target as far as possible, take one black rifle and proceed to outshoot the closed-minders

Unless he was the RO, I would have utterly ignored him, and kept on shooting.

At our club, I've never got really bad comments about the EBRs. (Most bad comments I get are when I bring along the BP flintlock muskets...)

Well, exc. for one old geezer, who jokingly asked me, what I hunted with that. (I had my Armalite) I remembered an old thread about Elmer Fudds here at ARFCOM, and remembering what one guy here said in a similar situation, I looked him straight in the eye, and said...."Poachers."

He stopped laughing after that.

Went shooting at a range out side of Tallahassee, and when me and my friend pulled up their was a woman shooting at the pistol side of the range. I went down to talk to her about going cold etc; I noticed she was wearing a duty belt and when she turned around she had an ATF badge on her belt.

We started shooting our WWII era rifles (an M1 Carbine and a #5 Enfield) without a problem but as SOON as we uncased our AR's she started spewing of anout how "Civilians" have NO need for such a firearm and how dare we show up at a PUBLIC range to shoot such vile devices in the presence of an ATF agent(even though she could have gone to the LEO range at Pat Thomas) and how they should all be banned, and are child killing bullet hoses and how us peons shouldnt be able to get near one, etc; etc;

You should have spat at her feet, and walked away. I have no respect for any govt. employee who spits on the Constitution by virtue of his or her very job.
