Why do people wave their Confederate flag around? Why are they so proud of it?

What I am really getting at here is this: Do the people today that love and speak highly of the old Confederates prefer and condone slavery?

Am I all wrong and they are against slavery but support the south's general patriotism?

No flaming, I really want to know since I live in a small town with plenty of Confederate flags around.

First of all, aside from what any uneducated liberals say, the Civil war was about state's rights and in no way was it because of slavery. The vast majority of people I know that fly them, wear them, have them on cars or in my case on my body, do not believe in, or condone slavery.

I'm proud to be from the south. I'm proud to be surrounded by ass busting farmers and ranchers. Just the same way I'm proud to be from Arkansas. And from the U.S.

Well there are a lot of people that don't think the Holocaust happened, but it did.

A big part of the civil war was about opposition to slavery, which the south condoned and wanted.

The Civil war was almost exclusively over slavery! Your denial of absolute facts is akin to people denying evolution, and I imagine the people that cling most tightly the one cling just as tightly to the other!

If it was about slavery why did the north also have slaves at the outset of it? Why did black FREEDMEN in the south volunteer to fight for the south? Quit being such sheeple and listening to liberals and research it. The south was considered the workhorse of the country. We supplied the vast majority of the countrys textiles and paid higher taxes. That's what it was about.

Lincoln amassed 75,000 union troops on the Virginia border months before the South struck back against northern imperialism by seizing the taxing authority at Fort Sumpter. The war had little to do with slavery until Lincoln, faced with massive northern resistance to the war effort, shifted the focus from state's rights to slavery in an attempt to appease the liberal ruling class of northern society.

The Confederate Battle Flag is a symbol of resistance against tyranny and an oppressive central government.

You should honor it and not ask such dipshit questions....

Edited to add- Southern agriculture interests were huge corporations- financed almost exclusively by union banks. Those of you who believe the spoon-fed pablum that the civil war was about slavery are truly stupid misinfomed. Do you really think that a poor southern boy from North Carolina joined the war effort so a rich, elitist corporate plantation owner could own slaves? Here's a hint, dickwads confused persons, do some homework and leave that liberal public education bullshit behind.

www.tsl.state.tx.us/ref/abouttx/secession/2feb1861.html

DECLARATION OF CAUSES: February 2, 1861
A declaration of the causes which impel the State of Texas to secede from the Federal Union.

She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as negro slavery--the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits--a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time.

They demand the abolition of negro slavery throughout the confederacy, the recognition of political equality between the white and the negro races, and avow their determination to press on their crusade against us, so long as a negro slave remains in these States.

Read the rest of the declaration in the link. Or, should I go on?

Might want to point out that the cost of slaves being what they were, and the way that the north was raping the south, the vast majority of slave owners were in fact northerners that had properties and managers in the south.... Not that I condone slavery, I just find it laughable that people think joe dirt farmer was willgn to spen $1000 or so on a healthy young slave to do work they could just breed their own kids to do far cheaper. Slaves were not nearly as cheap as people want to beleive.

I fly the Stars and bars because I beleive in what they fought for (State's rights, not this misidentified beleif in slavery being a reason, the North had slaves too afterall)

Saying that the Civil War was fought over slavery shows a complete lack of understanding concerning history and serves only to embarass you. How about looking into an unfair tariff burden the south was carrying. Imagine if the federal government declared today that "taxes in the blue states are 5% but they will now be 20% in the red states"

Things like that lead to a civil war...and it did

To all the slavery whiners. While I do not condone slavery I feel the need to point out that not only were the ENslavers black, but that when America instituted a program and country in Africa, Liberia, to return freedmen to Africa, many former SLAVES, RE-Enslaved other freedmen and sold them back. No one seems to remember all that because it takes so much wind out of the racism arguement.

It's kind of like gun control. You compromise and capitulate until you finally say, "NO". The flag is just a symbol of one group's fight against being controlled by another.

The flag, like guns, will one day be illegal. Then the activist will be on to their next agenda item.

+1

If you push a little harder guys you can your head deeper in the sand and you will not even hear us point out how the Civil War was caused by Slavery.

You can trace the beginnings of the conflict back to the fight over the expansion westward. Would all these states be free or slave states? Why was the south so freaking worried? Because if all the new states came in as free states, eventually those new states could support laws or amendments that abolished slavery.

You talk about states rights. The right the south was most concerned with was the state's right to own slaves. Anything else was a minor issue. Right to seccede from the union? Why did they want to seccede in the first place? Because they were loosing the battle over whether the western territories would be slave or free, and that the south would lose its power in congress to prevent anti-slavery legislation. So like a whiney bitch they decided they would take their ball and go home.

So how did they take their ball and go home? By firing on a federal fort in South Carolina.

To keep the boarder states in the Union in a time of war! The ultimate goal was 1. Restoration of the Union and 2. Freeing the Slaves. You can't do two before one, at least in the boarder states.

It was simply a matter of wartime expediancy in keeping what states he could.

Because the Union was broke!

Why was the Union broke? Cause the South left b/c of worry over the ability to keep slaves in the future!

Can't free the slaves in the south unless you control the south. How do you control the south again? By restoring the union.

Billybob2002...how's that nanny state working out for you? Here in the south, we don't legislate that our boss must pay for healthcare, we pay for it ourselves. It seems to be working seeing that Texas will gain 2 more house seats from the blue states next census.

The battles that caused the Civil War are still being fought today. Individual freedom and personal responsibility vs. a nanny state.

why then were slave owners in kentucky and west virginia allowed to keep their slaves after siding with the union

slaves in these states were not freed until the signing of the 13th amendment at the wars end. the emancipation proclimation did exactly dick, as it freed only confederate slaves. similar to if bush declared that all cubans in cuba must wear red on tuesdays.

Most people in the South did not own slaves. They could not afford either the price or the maintenance.

It was a horrible economic system and one that most Southerners wanted to be rid of but couldn't.

Remember that slaves were a capital asset. Those that had slaves had a large part of their paper wealth tied up in them. That was Jefferson's problem. His enterprise -- like most farmers -- teetered on the edge all the time. If he lost them as capital assets, his balance sheet went in the toilet. Southerners that had slaves knew that it wasn't efficient but they were harnessed to it as much as the slaves were.

Minor issue compared to Slavery.

No one is saying there were not other disagreements, but the sum total of all those "other" reasons would not have led to the ACW if there had been no slavery in the first place.

It has nothing to do with politics. You need to read more -- if you really want to understand the causes of the Civil War, that is.

ETA: Current politics, that is. It had EVERYTHING to do with the politics of the time. Read John Adams by McCulloch and you can see it coming even as the ink was drying on the Constitution.

Yea the FACT that the south wanted the individual state's right to own slaves

Whats even better is the bitter, presistant denial of facts and spewing of their left wing babble to "prove" their points that have been beat down time and time again. Hell Mississippi's population is mostly black and they just voted to keep the confederate flag in their states flag. That's a fact that cannot be disputed, it is a widely documented historical FACT. The North attacked us to bring us back to the union because they needed our textiles and lumber and extra taxes they were getting from us. They had slaves to. Your wrong, get over it.

Yea the right to own slaves, or at least they soon would be with all the new western states.

Yea the FACT that the south wanted the individual state's right to own slaves

Oh so the NORTH started the war. HA

Ever heard of small fort located in SC that the south FIRED on first because, like any good commander, the union officer refused to surrender to a MOB of civilians!

Talk about brainwashed

You are consistantly glossing over major events like slavery, fort sumpter and trying to say the minor differences were the only reason for the war!

I speak of facts, and you deny them, call me what you will, at least I'm educated about it.

+eleventybillion
Whats even better is the bitter, presistant denial of facts and spewing of their left wing babble to "prove" their points that have been beat down time and time again. Hell Mississippi's population is mostly black and they just voted to keep the confederate flag in their states flag. Southern black people know it's not racist, why can't liberal white people figure it out?

No one is arguing over the Confederate Battle Flag.

I and others have pointed out the real reasons for the war, and none of you have responded in detail.
