anyone fly recently with a handgun in checked baggage?

what kind of procedures were there and how long did it take to get through check in?

This, actually, has been discussed ad nauseum.

It is harmless. Your airline may vary, but I fly Delta.

Declare firearm at ticket counter - fill out declaration form - they will request DHS or TSA to verify weapon is unloaded (I leave mine at slide lock for their ignorance) return weapon to lockable case (Independent lockable case (btw, this case MUST be enclosable within your checked luggage). Lock. Fly.
