+1 But I live a luxurious lifestyle, and have all three. With that said, I use a computer with internet more than any of the others. Next would be a phone. Last would be a tv. |

I tend to shop for non-food items more and more online. I also get my news online.
I don't know if it's exactly a necessity, but I sure would go without a lot if I didn't have internet access. And having free TV and phone service wouldn't begin to make up for it. ~ |

Since:
1. This thread is running over the weekend, 2. Most of the folks with a PC at work don't work weekends, and 3. Many of the folks who have a PC at work either can't or won't cruise ARFCOM, I'd venture that most of the folks who feel a home PC isn't necessary... ...won't be replying to this thread.  – Ski("Anyone who isn't here, please SPEAK UP!")bane –

Luxury.
I still take classes. I have to either go to campus or stay late at work to use a computer. It is a major pain in the ass. You can't go to college anymore without access to a computer, but most colleges now have ample access on campus (computer labs). I do remember reading that one of the big universities was going to require freshman to have a laptop in the next couple of years. I still say it is a luxury to have one at home. (I don't, and yet I continue to breath normally!) |

When push comes to shove, I think one has to agree that it is a LUXURY.
If you need access for various reasons like product research, homework, etc, you can use the public library. The question of a "HOME PC" implies a household appliance or a PC secondary to a business PC. So I would make a distinction between a business asset and a home appliance on this topic. Definitely a Luxury. That said, I don't want to be without one! Oh, and IBTP |

it really depends.
For me it is a luxury, but that is because I have one at work that I could use to pay bills and order stuff when I need to. For others that work at home or don't have one at work, I think it becomes a necessity. |

must have mainly for my bill pay though my bank. Other great things about home pc, ARFCOM, Netflix, ARFCOM vendors<--------nice to know you can find "real info" and not some bullshit from a former Navy Seal at the gunshop. Update news and access to outlets that advance the conservative cause.

I work from home, mostly. Necessity for me. For alot of folks, I wouldn't put it up there with basic utilities, but I'd say it's somewhere in the middle. You son't need it, but it's certainly more than a nice luxury. It's incredibly usefull.
It's kind of like having a washing machine. You don't NEED it, but it sure makes doing laundry a hell of alot easier.

There is now enough content out there that it is a necessity.
Its actually to the point where I even have no problem with someone on welfare buying a computer with what is effectively my money. Still get pissed off abouth the cable TV and Game Cubes though. |

It's becoming pretty much a necessity. As far as commerce and communications go at least. There are still some home's with PC's in them, but not the internet, as well as homes with neither.
Basically, you can get by without it, but everyone and everything assumes that you do. 5 years ago when I was either a sophomore or a junior in high school I remember 95% of my classmates had access to the internet at home. That was 5 years ago, middle class neighborhood. |
