I'm looking to build the ultimate 50s sci fi DVD collection.

Here's what I have so far:

Forbidden Planet (1956)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
The Thing From Another World (1951)
Invaders from Mars (1953)
It Came from Outer Space (1953)
Missile to the Moon (1958)
Cat-Women of the Moon (1953)
Invaders from Mars (1953)
Flight to Mars (1951)
The Blob (1958)
The War of the Worlds (1953)
The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1953)
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956)

I'm not looking to get the real crappy ones like anything made by Ed Wood but titles like "This Island Earth (1955)" are fine. The fact that they may have been the subject of MST3K isn't a automatic disqualifyer.

What do I still need?

Obviously titles must be available on DVD.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
The Tingler (1959)
On The Beach (1959) Not "Cheesy" but definently 50's sci fi
Link Posted: 1/12/2006 9:07:17 PM EDT
Flash Gordon.

The Last Man on Earth (1964)

Edit: Ok, not in the 50's, but cool movie

Not too sure about the quality of "The Tingler" but I know I saw it over 30 years ago and I still remember being creeped by it. If you can fudge on your decade "The Man With The X-Ray Eyes" (1963) would fill the bill
Link Posted: 1/12/2006 9:40:05 PM EDT
Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
Link Posted: 1/12/2006 9:43:57 PM EDT
Conquest of Space - 1954
Destination Moon - 1950
The War of the Worlds - 1953
When Worlds Collide - 1951
20 Million Miles To Earth - 1957
It Came From Beneath The Sea - 1955

Flash Gordon was a tv show in the 1950's

Not much help, but I recall a movie that had a small town with a sudden heat wave, an odd whistleing noise, and roasted citizens. Turned out to be some hi-temp radioactive creepy-crawlies that were done in by the rain. Anyone know the title?

Not a 50's movie, but good: The Monolith Monsters. Anybody have that one on DVD?

Manos: The Hands of Fate

"Invasion of the Body Snatchers" is probably the best movie you're missing.

As for the worst movie you're missing....even if you don't want anything Ed Wood, "Plan 9 from Outer Space" is so bad that it's really pretty funny. I don't think any comprehensive 50's Outer Space movie collection is quite complete without it. Just have one "baddest of the bad" amongst the good(ish).

+1 on When Worlds Collide- excellent movie.

Tarantula
Monolith Monsters

ETA: SteyrAUG, can you point me to some of the good British horror movies from the late sixties/early seventies?

"THEM" (1954)

Giant ants attack ....James Whitmore & James Arness (Marshall Dillon) have to save the world
Cameo roles by Mr. Spock and Davy Crockett too

I know the movie you are talking about, I think the people were on an island and they were british. Some kind of hot slimy creatures roaming about.

The Crawling Eye (1958) cheesy but enjoyable

Gwen

I still enjoy the classic "B" sci fi

A favorite of mine, and I wasn't born till the 80s... The 90s remake isn;t too good though.

It's on DVR at Retroflicks.com as well as some others.

The monolith Monsters is on DVR at ebay but still waiting on the "official" version

The Monster That Conquered The World is on DVD.

The Brain Eaters.

Terror In The Year Zero.........on DVD.

Link Posted: 1/12/2006 11:33:00 PM EDT
This whole "available on DVD" thing is a real deal breaker for me too. But, for what it's worth, the DVR's that I have bought play just as well on both my computer and regular DVD player. Frankly, you might have to wait forever for some of these to come out on DVD.

Matanga(Attack Of The Mushroom People) is now out on DVD. Attack of the Saucer Men is still DVR only as is Equinox, Lets Scare Jessica To Death, and Creature With The Atom Brain".

Seriously......I'd give Retroflicks, and DVR a try. It might save considerable time, and considerable rewritting of the original by studios(find me a truly original star wars if you can.....nuff said).

The beginning of the end sucks!!!!!
Link Posted: 1/13/2006 12:01:47 AM EDT
The Deadly Mantis (1957) - a must!
Link Posted: 1/13/2006 12:06:12 AM EDT
Another vote for “This Island Earth”!!

Disney’s “20,000 Leagues Underneath the Sea” (which admittedly isn’t cheesy).

“It! The Terror from Beyond Space” is a cheapie, but was the inspiration for the later – and vastly better - “Aliens”. Doubt it’s on DVD though.

I admit I’ve never gotten a chance to see it, but there’s a British movie called “The Creeping Unknown” (or “The Quatermass Xperiment”) that’s supposedly pretty good.

I guess you could also include “Godzilla” if you wanted.

The blonde in the navy uniform talking to Mr Spock is someone famous as well, I just can't place her.

For that matter, get all the ones with giant radioactive bugs. Esp the one with the giant praying mantis.

It's a very "50's" movie, but unfortunately it was released in 1962; "The Day of the Triffids"
Link Posted: 1/13/2006 7:49:56 AM EDT
The one that comes to my mind is

"Day of the Triffods" that one creeped me out when I was kid.

I have a LOT of titles on DVR including "Attack of the Saucer Men", I'm just looking to get the official DVD collection going, especially with all the Wade Williams titles out there. I'm looking to get my 50s sci fi up to about 100 titles or so. Not only that but official relases with bonus features are gold. The criterion collection release of "The Blob" has lots of decent bonus features.

Have Godzilla and the related sequels and other titles like Rodan.
