Damn... I was gonna mention that one.

Again, I'm staying away from the serious crap like Ed Wood. Only John Waters movies are worse.

When Worlds Collide - 1951

...

One of my very favorites, ever since I was a child.  I don't know if it is available on DVD, but I have it on LD.

Great pre-PC presentation of gun-attitudes & TEOTWAWKI.

I used to hear rumors about a big-budget remake, but not in a while...

FWIW, the book is good, too (of course, I read it way back in elementary school so take that with a grain of salt... ) - IIRC the movie only covers the first half of the book.

ETA:  It is available on DVD...  www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005NG6A/002-9713318-1250404?v=glance&n=130
(They have the book, too... it was reprinted in paperback '99.  Didn't realize it was written in the '30s... )

This whole "available on DVD" thing is a real deal breaker for me too. But, for what it's worth, the DVR's that I have bought play just as well on both my computer and regular DVD player. Frankly, you might have to wait forever for some of these to come out on DVD.

Matanga(Attack Of The Mushroom People) is now out on DVD. Attack of the Saucer Men is still DVR only as is Equinox, Lets Scare Jessica To Death, and Creature With The Atom Brain".

Seriously......I'd give Retroflicks, and DVR a try. It might save considerable time, and considerable rewritting of the original by studios(find me a truly original star wars if you can.....nuff said).

I have a LOT of titles on DVR including "Attack of the Saucer Men", I'm just looking to get the official DVD collection going, especially with all the Wade Williams titles out there. I'm looking to get my 50s sci fi up to about 100 titles or so. Not only that but official relases with bonus features are gold. The criterion collection release of "The Blob" has lots of decent bonus features.

Invasion of the Saucer Men was very poorly remade as Attack if the the Eye Creatures.

The original Gamera film is pretty good and a must-have for any kaiju fan.

You guys do know the new Blue Ray / HD-DVD formats are going to make the current DVD's we all own a thing of the past, right? Yup,  another format.

Yeah, I remember when they announced that DAT was gonna replace regular tapes.

In addition most films currently available won't show any difference whatsoever between the current DVD format and a HD DVD format. This is because they weren't filmed in HD.

I think HD DVD is going to be like laserdiscs. I don't think the current market will permit it.

Monolith Monsters

ETA: SteyrAUG, can you point me to some of the good British horror movies from the late sixties/early seventies?

I love this movie (a meteorite made up of magic rocks that grow when wet), the science in it is so much fiction.

And it certainly isn’t going to make a difference in the films we’re listing here!

Still, the joker in the deck is not about film quality, but pirating.  I’d expect the movie industry to push really hard for new formats.

OBTW, don’t know if it’s on DVD but “Colossus of New York” had a pretty neat robot.

Bingo. And that is why the public isn't gonna want to part with standard DVD.

"The Thing From Another World " 1951 was the predecessor to "The Thing" 1982 based upon the short story "Who Goes There..."

The 1982 version with Kurt Russel was actually more true to the short story than the 1951 version.  A lot of '50's science fiction was loosely written to feed nervousous about Communism.

Yes, I finally read the book last year, and want to read it again soon! Loved it, and all the short stories in the edition I have. Book has a different (more interesting) ending.
