I'd love to hear the details of this "incident". Anyone have the inside scoop on what he said?

Naval Academy Professor Accused of Remarks

By BEN NUCKOLS
The Associated Press
Saturday, January 7, 2006; 4:16 PM

BALTIMORE -- A Naval Academy professor who allegedly made sexually offensive remarks to midshipmen has been charged with conduct unbecoming an officer and other offenses.

An attorney for Lt. Bryan Black, who teaches oceanography at the academy in Annapolis, said the charges are baseless and that the language his client used was mild in a military setting.

According to military court documents, Black used "crude, sexual terms" to refer to his ex-wife in at least two conversations with midshipmen.

He's also accused of using sexually offensive language to describe his admiration for battleships in a conversation with several midshipmen, at least one of them female. Both of the alleged incidents occurred in August.

"The comments my client made are nothing that midshipmen would not have seen in the movie 'Top Gun,'" Charles Gittins, Black's attorney, said Saturday. "In fact, one of the comments he made is right out of 'Top Gun,' except it refers to a battleship" instead of a plane.

A preliminary report by a Marine Corps investigator into the allegations concluded that Black's actions did not warrant criminal processing and that he should receive a letter of caution and formal counseling.

Gittins said Vice Adm. Rodney Rempt, the academy superintendent, pushed for a special court-martial only after Rempt was rebuked by two members of the Naval Academy Board of Visitors for his handling of sexual harassment at the academy.

Black was formally charged in October, according to court documents. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Friday, followed by the court-martial on Jan. 30.

A special court-martial is an intermediate level of military trial, and Black would not face a discharge or incarceration if convicted.

Cmdr. Rod Gibbons, a Naval Academy spokesman, said Black had been charged with conduct unbecoming an officer, indecent language and failure to obey a lawful general order or regulation. He declined to discuss specifics of the case or Rempt's alleged role, citing the ongoing legal proceedings.

Through his attorney, Black declined to comment Saturday.

The military of the past was greatly inferior to the military of the present. Swearing should be expected from the uneducated masses that make up the enlisted force of our military, but an educated officer(in this case a professor) should not be making any sexually suggestive or derogatory remarks(along with racist, xenophobic, sexist, religious) around his students or subordinates; the Academy is a place to get your education, not a place to learn the newest slang.

Yeah, spill your fancy book-learnin' to Patton. I suspect you'd have heard a few choice words. AND his outfit was as good as any we have today, for the time.

Next you'll say the world has become so sophisticated that we can just outlaw war.

Those poor women! Cover their ears

They know that once the allegation is out they will find others willing to cash in as well, even at the expense of ruining a fine institution even further. If it's a real problem, fine. I suspect 90% of the reports that make the news are bullshit.

No, we need to get rid of the Abrahamic religions first before we can do that.

The military of the past may well have been inferior to that of today, but that doesn't excuse or redeem the GELDINGS responsible for busting an officer for his fucking language.

That's conduct unbecoming an officer right there.. Being a fucking pussy. Nobody stopped at the Battle of Midway to see how the sailors FELT about the whole thing. Bull Halsey didn't hang banners in Pearl reading "Win the Hearts of More of our Respected Japanese Opponent".

so would I, but you are being really moronic if you believe that it is appropriate for a professor at a military academy to make sex related remarks around his students with impunity. I suppose you would support me, if I were a professor, telling my students how I view Christianity as a stupid religion, filled with barbarous morons who only follow it because they are cowards who fear non-existence? Neither are acceptable in positions of academia or other professional settings; I would like to think that our military is more disciplined and organized than a gentlemen's club.

I'd love to see you in the military in WWII...you could go lecture Patton about his xenphobic, and racist tendencies after his "kill the krauts and use their guts to grease the tank treads" speech.

I feel that there is a difference between offensive comments in morale building speeches in the middle of a war, and talking off hand to your students about what gets your rocks off. In Patton's case, he was talking to the uneducated men that made up the enlisted force, so it is appropriate to converse with them in their own language; the professor was conversing with individuals who are educated, future officers, and using sexually suggestive language is something that isn't acceptable between officers and cadets.

I do not think that you have any right to take anything from a foreign country that you do not pay for. If you kill a soldier, that weapon is now the property of YOUR COUNTRY, NOT you and such a weapon should be either:

1) destroyed
2) turned over to the armory

from there, you can buy them from your military if they will let you.

Why don't you just figure out that scientific advances were made by "learned men" of faith. But you won't because you will lose the argument and you'd have to come up with something else to replace religion. Besides, if you're recourse is to refer to a book, might as well refer to the Bible.

For those who don't know, here are a few gems from his Wikipedia entry.

Many of us saw religion as harmless nonsense. Beliefs might lack all supporting evidence but, we thought, if people needed a crutch for consolation, where's the harm? September 11th changed all that. Revealed faith is not harmless nonsense, it can be lethally dangerous nonsense. Dangerous because it gives people unshakeable confidence in their own righteousness. Dangerous because it gives them false courage to kill themselves, which automatically removes normal barriers to killing others. Dangerous because it teaches enmity to others labelled only by a difference of inherited tradition. And dangerous because we have all bought into a weird respect, which uniquely protects religion from normal criticism. Let's now stop being so damned respectful!

Blaming all religion for Wabbism. Cute.

On the advice of his late colleague Stephen Jay Gould, Dawkins refuses to participate in debates with creationists because doing so would give them the "oxygen of respectability" that they want with the public; Dawkins argued that creationists "don't mind being beaten in an argument. What matters is that we give them recognition by bothering to argue with them in public." (A Devil's Chaplain, p. 256)

Doesn't like debate. Typical.

As a supporter of the Great Ape Project, a movement to extend human rights to all Great Apes (gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans), he contributed an article to a book of the same name entitled "Gaps In The Mind." In this article, he criticised contemporary society's moral attitudes which are based on a "discontinous, speciesist imperative."

PETA insanity at its finest.

Basically your typical leftist douche.

Just before I retired in '92, I had to attend a lecture in the base theater about PC bullshit. Tailhook was still a painful boil on our asses and the Navy leadership was still running scared.

Anyway...for about two hours out of my normally otherwise productive day, I, a surface warfare officer and one who had NEVER in any way abused, maltreated, or made any pass at any hottie female sailor, had to endure some smug, snarky female officer as she told me and all of the rest of us males just how fucked up we all were.

This from a non-warrior, land-lubber who had probably never been to sea a day in her career.

I then had to sign a fucking document that attested that I was never at Tailhook and was not a sexist prick! That pissed me off SO much!

Then a couple of years ago, I learned that the Navy has changed the Crossing The Line Ceremony and the Chiefs' Initiation, two of the most hallowed and ancient ceremonies in the services. In fact, there is was nothing like either in any other service. I understand that they have both become completely pussified. That IS a shame. What the PC crowd could never understand was that though each ceremony had its silly parts much like a ridiculous frat ceremony, they were designed to instill the sense of BROTHERHOOD in the participants. Those bonds are now broken as far as I'm concerned.

Swearing, and most lewd talk, should be required in the US Navy and the other services. Well, maybe not the USAF, somehow it doesn't sound sincere coming out of those blue suits.

No, they DO understand. You may have loyalty to the commune and only the commune. Family, Church, Fleet, etc. must go. One of the goals of PC is to supplant all other moral codes with its own perverse logic.

Yes, and you can thank people who think like this Pre Med Gunner guy....

So they pussified the time honored tradition of the transformation of Pollywogs into Shellbacks? Unbelievable. My Dad was in the Navy, COMSVNTHFLT in Flag Plot....he told me many times about the "festivities" associated with crossing the equator...and I have his pics and his cruise books with more pics. (He also has been inducted into the Domain of the Golden Dragon....crossing the International Dateline, however he is not a Golden Shellback). I love to talk to him about his days in the Navy.

So what do they do now? No more seeing the Royal Dentist, or kissing th Royal Baby's belly? Or appearing before King Neptune? What they have a ceremony on the mess deck and just pronounce everybody as Shellbacks?

Where do these people come from....lets destroy centuries of tradition, lets keep our boy from bringing back a souvenir or two, we must be politically correct....lets not offend our enemies...

Sad, sad, sad.....

I'd rather see women home barefoot and pregnant then in a service academy where their poor widdle sensitive ears might be offended. Wonder what will happen when they have to tell some guy to clean the head? Will they stroke out?

And I suspect the same women would do better IF they were home, and barefoot and pregnant.

Oh, and my ex is a BITCH. Offended? To bad, because it's the truth.

For those who don't know, here are a few gems from his Wikipedia entry.

In 1976, Richard got to host his own show, Family Feud. Unlike his flop in 1974 with Masquerade Party, Family Feud became a hit, soon surpassing his very own number-one daytime show, Match Game 77. In 1978, he left the Match Game. After Dawson became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1984, he showed his passport and photo during the introduction of an episode of Family Feud. He continued hosting the Feud until it was cancelled in 1985. Dawson's most famous habit was kissing every female contestant on the show. Dawson was not a fan of the "strike" buzzer during the main game, and in fact asked the producers to reduce the buzzer sound to 1/4 of a second, or sometimes 1/10th of a second.

Damn, and I always liked the Feud...

I, like a few others, attended a military academy. My squadron was ran by an A10 driver who was tough as nails. Thank God for him.

Back to the story.............that sucks.
Military academies exist, and have existed, to produce officers, leaders, who have to LEAD. Sometimes even in WAR .
And sometimes, you actually have to be tough, rough, and unrefined.

Leave the higher thinkers at the Ivy League schools and give me Patton any day!!

Well, they all can't be fighter pilot/secret agent types like on JAG...............

While I agree that it is inapropriate for an instructor at an academy to be spewing vulgarity about his ex-wife to his students, it is certainly not worthy of a court-martial or even some formal reprimand

And even if slightly inapporpriate in a classrom context, it is STILL the military, which more than compensates for that.

People need to lighten the fuck up.

FWIW, I am currently a university professor, and USED to be an army officer (back in the old country). I use video clips in my undergraduate class that contain among other, the following gems:

"Well, we're in a hell of a fucking mess here, aren't we"
"Do you hear me, you fucking faggots?"
"Jesus jumping Christ. Two fucking weeks and everyone's swimming the other fucking way"
"Fuck you, is my name"

As long as things are in a context, there's nothing wrong with foul language.

What's wrong with telling Navy kids doing weapons training to aim for "high center mass" instead of saying "head shot"??

Or telling female recruits to keep their "lower extremities" a certain distance apart while in a shooting stance so as not to offend them by telling them to keep their legs apart?

Isn't that progress?

+1

And who do you think keeps the military running? Is it an educated officer that keeps a $2B stealth bomber in the air or handful of the uneducated masses?

Maybe not from the boys in polyester, but those of us that wear green still need to curse on occasion. Sometimes a jet just needs to be sweared at to work.

Those are the truest words I've read here this week. Been there, done that, too.
