I currently have a Smith & Wesson Tactical .40 loaded with Ranger SXT's as my nightstand bump in the night go-to gun.

While I am profecient with it, I find myself disliking the idea of a decocker/safety device on my pistol. I think that at 2am the less bells and whistles I have to worry about, the better.

I am considering switching to a Glock 21 with night sites and a Surefire X200 on it for a new nitestand gun.

Pros:
-BG's dislike the taste of .45
-13rd capacity is a plus
-Safe action = point and pull reliability (no decocker/safety to foul the engagement)

Cons:
its not a 1911

What do YOU trust YOUR life with?

ETA: What about lighting? Seperate flashlight..gun mounted light?

I want pics of these palaces that you guys who say this live in.  Unless you live by yourself on 20+ acres and you have 10000 sq foot homes and the ability to shoot unobsructed over 50 yrds indoors you guys using your rifles as home protection are gonna be fucked when ya shoot the bad guy kill him and the bullet goes thru your next 2 neighbors houses and hit one of them.  The longest shot I can make unobstructed inside my house is approx 25 '.    I think hand guns and skatter guns are more then enuff for in home protection.  And to answer the original question SA 1911 ultra compact.

Look guy, .223 rounds are less likely to go through your neighbors house than a 9mm round. If a shotgun or a pistol is "good enough" for you, fine. Don't criticize others until you know what you are talking about. There is a very good reason most police forces have switched to ARs from MP5s.

you sir are pretty damn ignorant.  my carbine is more accurate than any handgun I own at the limited ranges I have in my apartment, and I wont have to worry about making the moving head shot if someone is wearing soft body armor, which your .45ACP has little to no chance of defeating.  I also know from personal experience that .223 will drop a human far more effectively than damn near any handgun, and I have complete confidence in the weapon.
btw, I live in a shithole 2 bedroom apartment.

All rounds - with the possible exception of birdshot - will penetrate walls. Know your target and what's behind it.

I have an m4gery next to my bed. And an A2 under it. And a 1911 in a drawer.

Pistols are used to fight your way to your rifle. Besides, I don't live near neighbors, unlike you city folk.
