If so, please tell where your expertise lies and how you gained the experience and knowledge that made you an expert in your particular area.

Quality Systems as defined by the FDA Quality System Regulation and ISO.

Method: 10 years in the industry doing almost nothing but.

Oh, and I still have tons to learn. I hate calling myself an expert on anything, as there is always something additional to be learned.

Echoing Zaphod's comments, I don't like calling myself an expert in anything - somebody always knows more.

That said, I design call centers for a living, and I'm pretty good at it. Rather than post a laundry list of everything I know having worked in I.T. for 8+ years, I'll just say that I'm pretty good with computers 'n' shit.

Company sent me to some trianing calsses. Training school gave me a certificate saying I was a certified expert in Microsoft Excel 2000.

I guess that counts.

The one thing I am pretty decent at is Unigraphics modeling. I don't know that I would say I am an expert at it, but I know that I am better than many. I do enjoy being able to do things that many with as much or more experience can't figure out. It makes me feel that I am at least good at something.

I have done it for 10+ years.

As with many on arfcom that have very specific training and jobs, I can in fact be described as an expert.

Without sounding arrogant (assuming I am even capable of that ) my "expertise" lies in a specific sub-field of team and job design, and I've gained that expertise through my Ph.D. training and years of empiricial research and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. When I turn in my tenure packet later this year, I will in all honesty claim to be the current leading expert in the world on this narrow topic. But, it is a very specialized field, so being an expert is not really that impressive - it just makes me an incredible nerd.

ETA: I am also considered an expert by some when it comes to a particular sub-type of hierarchial multiple regression analysis. (But that's unrealted to the content of my research, just a specific research methods paper I have published that gets cited a lot)

Halo and Halo 2. I'm not the best person playing the games, but I am good. But ask me just about ANYTHING about the single-player universe or the multiplayer game.

I am an expert at being lazy and wasting time.

Keep in mind I work a full time job, go to school 6-9 hours a semester, train in kung fu and full contact kick boxing and play soccer.

So the little time I do have that is free, I can make the most of it.
I mean seriously, wasting time is an artform that I have mastered.
I meant to be an expert at procrastinating but I guess I 'll get around to it later.

Yes, I am concidered an expert at what I do. In fact, I'm probably considered to be one of the best in the world at what I do.
Unfortunately, I cannot tell you what that is because I'm a member of such a tiny community of professionals that with knowledge of what I do and where I am located, anyone could figure out specifically who I am and I value my online anonymity.

But I can tell you this. I got to where I am by serendipity. I sort of fell into it, or sort of naturally gravitated to it. It uses talents that I've always possessed but didn't always use for this particular thing. But it seems that for all of my previous existance, if I was doing something that I really loved, it had application to what I'm doing now.

I can also tell you that I don't earn a large income, but it is sufficient to take care of my needs.

'60s ~'70s Italian car parts.
Every fall a couple of guys in the business, an American and a German, fly me to Germany/Italy to accompany them to a parts show, and usally a few warehouse's, just to look at and identify what's being offered. Two years ago, they brought me to Argentina for the same reason. I've had vehicle's pictured in magazine's and books and one chosen as the display model at a 100yr anniversary for the marque.
