I love the heck out of Google. But their "sponsored links" could really use some tact sometimes.

On Excite news pages there is a add section labeled "Google sponsored links". It shows links to adds related to the news topic you are reading.

Headline: Rescuers to Push Deeper to Find Miners

"Google sponsored links"
Miners Needed. Apply today and start your exciting career in mining.
Drillers: We are looking for you! Apply now.

For crying out loud. Sometimes they really say the wrong fricking things at the wrong fricking times.

Yep. They change every few minutes, I tried to get a screen shot of the bad ones, but they have changed, and I don't feel like sitting there hitting th re-fresh button.

Now they have up:

HDD Broker -used hdd rigs - Hundreds of used & repo directional drills & accessories. Free listings
Hardface For Better Wear - Hardface Drilling, Boring and HDD Equipment - Prevent Abrasion & Wear

Makes sence. Drilling article. Drilling adds. But some of them are really bad to be shown with the article.

It almost looks like an ad for 'porn industry' help!

Can't be helped, the way it works is that hte ads are thrown up dynamically without a person oking them for specific sites.

They are put up based on relation to the site in question... so since the story used the word "Miner" a lot the program put up the ad's that paid to be associatted with mining.

The issue is that google ads are context sensitive. So if they hit on a few keywords- say 'mining' and 'west virginia', it will show the ads that are linked to those keywords.

Computers don't give a damn about injury or death. They only do what the program tells them to do. And in this case, it's the computers, not google, pulling out the ads.

BTW, the ads that appear for gmail users are the same way. So if you want to mess with someone with a gmail account, throw a couple rude phrases in your mail to them. Then they'll get related ads along with your email.
