Any of the beef flavored MREs taste like ass. I stick to just the chicken ones, much better, but still worse then the DFAC.

I got so many uneaten MRE components in my room its about disgusting.

CCC is pretty good, way better than some of the early MRE menus IMO. If you want a good ration, look for the MCW or CWR. They are a little more difficult to find and expensive, but worth it.

MCW's and CWR's are low moisture rations with the main entree being a bag of freeze dried food made by Mountain House. Damn good Shit right there, boy. The down side is that you have to have water to eat them, but the upside is that they don't freeze in your car or spoil early from heat. They are also about double the caloric calue of a regular MRE with a lot of drink mixes, lurrps etc to keep you hydrated and nourished. You see the CWR's on Ebay regularly these days.

My most HATED one is the turkey.  Tasted like monkey butt.
Good thing is that you could easily trade that for a vegetarian meal.  Got to love bean burrito, and if its the pasta, I would always have a supply of tuna packets to add to that!
Beefsteak w/ Gravy.  Add the gravy drippings to the mashed potatoes...
Dump the Tabasco bottles, and get tapatio, makes them taste better.

New year, new MREs
Submitted by: Marine Forces Pacific

U.S. MARINE CORPS FORCES, PACIFIC, CAMP H. M. SMITH, Hawaii (01-03-2006) -- If you are tired of trying to make Meal-Ready-to-Eat menus more palatable, then your search may be over.

The field rations have progressed a long way from the C-rats of the past, and they continue to change even to this day.

Four of the current 24 MREs have been removed and are being replaced by new and improved menus, according to the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center, located in Natick, Mass.
Usually the ASSC only replaces two MREs a year, but this year they wanted to give the list a boost in variety.

“There was a lot of negative feedback on these four MREs, we couldn’t narrow it down to just two,” said Judith Aylward, the MRE Improvement project manager.

Country Captain’s Chicken, Thai Chicken, Beef Teriyaki and Pasta with Vegetables have all been scratched off the MRE menu.

The ASSC has come up with four new main meals and an assortment of new sides and candies approved by servicemembers by suggestion or taste tests.

“If there were four MRE boxes with one MRE left in each, all of them would be Country Captain’s Chicken,” said Sgt. Rusty Campbell, who while deployed in Afghanistan, had eaten MREs for 35 or more days straight. “If you got stuck with one, you just took everyone else’s Tabasco sauce and made the best of it.”

The four new meals include a penne pasta dish, chicken fajitas with soft tortillas, Sloppy Joe sauce to put on wheat snack bread and a cheese omelet breakfast meal.

The new meals were put on trial to ensure quality.

“All of our meals are put through field tests, which allows us to see how well the new meals fare against the current menus,” said Aylward.

The Operational Forces Interface Group is a team that takes surveys from Marine and Army installations throughout the nation. These surveys are used to get an accurate look at what the servicemembers enjoy, and what they just throw back in the box.

“Troop preference is the biggest consideration. We can make the meal fit every regulation, but if you don’t like it you’re not going to eat it,” said Aylward.

The new meals did well in recent taste tests with chicken fajitas being the favorite.

“I might be a little cautious about eating chicken fajitas from an MRE, but the idea does sound fairly appetizing,” said Sgt. Wayne R. Welty, a security specialist at Marine Corps Forces, Pacific.

Main meals are not the only thing needed to make an MRE the gourmet meals they are; sometimes little treats can make an unpopular meal great.

Snacks like the cinnamon scone and the orange carbohydrate drink, which has a strong resemblance to Gatorade, both scored high in the taste test. However, one item surpassed them all; Walnettos, a caramel and walnut flavored candy.

“The Walnettos went over surprisingly well, so we have started to work on a similar chocolate flavored candy,” said Alyward. “We have also been looking at adding more commercial items such as M&M’s, which are big moral boosters.”

Coming up with new menu ideas is a rather large challenge. Nutritionists like Alyward have to meet all sorts of standards.

These standards include nutritional value, weight & volume, and variety. There are even certain stipulations that require MREs to be made with only American-made products.

“There are so many factors to juggle, but the by far the most influential one is whether or not you like them,” said Alyward.

There shouldn’t be too much to worry about if you don’t like the taste of some of the items. Chances are if a lot of people share your opinion, the item will be gone by next year.

According to Alyward, the items for 2006 and 2007 have already been selected and the list for 2008 will be approved sometime in Feb. 2006.

“In the end, we may complain about it but we will still eat it,” said Campbell. “Its just a bonus if it tastes edible.”

Here is a sneak preview at the items slated for 2006 and 2007.

I'm not going to miss the beef teriyaki. I took one out on a hunting trip a couple weeks ago to try my first MRE. Looks like I picked one of the less desirable entrees...

you guys seen the new veggie and cheese omelette??? what an abortion!!! how can half this shit even leave the lab??? it's an off yellow glob of quivering goo that would knock a buzzard off a gut pile! the taste, if you can get past the spongy consistency, is basically like reconstituted, freeze-dried powdered eggs; not tasty but you know it is supposed to be eggs. this meal also comes with hash browns and bacon. it has a semblance to hash browns but it's all wet and mushy and you can hardly taste the bacon bits (or actually, the brown colored spots in the potatoes...i guess that was the bacon). after that comes the cherry? strawberry? pop-tart; a mashed, pasty, cardboard concoction with a sliver of red colored something in the middle...we have brand name tootsie rolls, folgers coffee, and tabasco hot sauce but we can't get real pop-tarts??? the final insult was a bag of redhots...wtf??? do they even make this crap anymore??? or did the .mil happen across a big supply from the 1950's for a good price??? ugh...not one of their better meals rejected by everyone...

Since my job takes me all over my metro area, I carry a couple of MREs in the car for lunch when it’s inconvenient to leave to go to a fast food joint, or when in the city where they overcharge for lunch.

I think they are good for the occasional lunch or too-lazy-to-cook dinner. If you think there are some krazy MRE aficionados here, you outa visit the forums at MRE Info . org
Real twisted MRE lovers, “Bless their hearts”!

Considering what MREs are, and the fact that almost no-one who offers them for sale has likely invested anything to procure them in the first place, it's unconscionable that someone would demand over $40.00 a case. BTW, that includes the profiteers in EE.
And the $25.00 "flat rate" shipping is just 'fee avoidance' in eBay and extra profit in the EE.

The market for MREs on eBay is finally beginning to settle out. It’s not too hard to find a case for ~$36.50 if you buy two at a time. And if you buy older ones, they get even cheaper.  I recently bought late 1999 MREs for $25.00 per + true cost shipping.

CCC = fucksnot.

I ate the better parts of about 50 of the fuckers last summer...all combined, it added up to maybe 24 MREs.

Chicken with Salsa was my favorite.

The Burrito wasn't bad.

After a while, my piss smelled exactly like the acidic sauce that's supposed to resemble tomatoes that they coat everything with.  Same with my sweat.

Surprisingly, the clam chowder was almost edible when warm.
