Deputy shoots man.

(Florence-AP) December 31, 2005 - A Darlington County Sheriff's deputy is on leave after fatally shooting a man in Chesterfield County while serving a warrant.

Darlington County sheriff's investigator Tim Robertson was serving a warrant on 45-year-old William Sheffield of Hartsville on Thursday night.

An incident report indicates that Sheffield bled to death from four gunshot wounds.

A statement from Sheffield's family claims the man was shot in the back while walking away from the officer.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident.

Update.

Apparently this guy was a violent felon. This deputy did a great service to his community!

"According to records provided by SLED, Sheffield is a convicted felon with an extensive criminal record, including several convictions for assault and battery with intent to kill, assault with a deadly weapon, drug possession and discharge of a firearm into a dwelling."

Good news to hear the dirtbag got what he deserved.

And, on another good note, no dogs were harmed.
