A wise friend says, "Every day above ground is a good day."

Since I spent 2005 above ground.....

Personally, it was an unremarkable year...well, excepting my mother's re-marriage.
But, she lives 1200+ miles away, so silver linings abound!

On a larger note, it was a horrible year weather wise.

Economically, the market ended flat...with signs of recession looming.

Personally, I am not optimistic about 2006 looking at the economic indicators I've seen.

But, forward we must go....

Well I hate to rain on your "I hated 2005" post, but it was a great year for me.

Although Hurricane Rita did some damage to my property, I have about fixed everything it tore up.

All in all, God was good to me in 2005.  Just like the 56 years preceeding it.

I will trust Him for 2006.

+1

I got accepted into a great graduate school, my career is on a great track, I have met some great people, and I'm enjoying New York City.  I miss my guns but it makes the obligatory AR cuddle time all the more sweeter when I'm back in Ohio.

I hope those who had crappy '05's have a better '06--especially victims of terrorism and natural disasters.

2005 kicked ass...  As did 2004, 2003, 2002,...  In most every year, you can find tragedy and heartache, much as you can find the good stuff.  It really depends on what you dwell on.

Every year I've been breathing could have been some degree of better, but they all could have been enormously worse.  Is the glass half empty, or half full?  The question should really be: Where's the faucet?

I've read some of the post's here, and by and large many of you have had a pretty lousy year..Myself? not too bad I guess, I worked about 7 months this year most of it overtime, (6-10's) managed to get a nice'03 and one of the last '03A3's off the rack at the CMP's North store. Spent nearly all the money I made on the house I'm living in.. New deck, New roof, New furnace, New eletric service and some wiring to correct former late owner's attempted wiring. But, When I sit down and think about it, I've got alot of things to be thankful for..I don't have a job..yet, I figure I'll be working in about a month.  My wife loves me, and I love her, I've got food, and a warm place to live, I've got a decent vehicle, I'm not living on the street. I've got alot of firearms, reloading equiptment and ammo. I've got my health. After hitting a semi head on 5 years ago, I'm thankful I'm alive. I'm glad I'm here. I do hope those of you who had really tough times in 2005 have a better year, this year.

Let's see..

February my mom was diagnosed with diabetes.

The week after that a very close friend of mine that was also my GF's best friend died at 19.

April my mom is told she needs knee surgery.

August she has knee surgery #1.

December 29 she has knee surgery #2.

Here's for a better 20-ought-six.

No offense bub, but those things seem kind of normal...

Wait until your parents get really old, and you fear the phone ringing at an odd time may be the 'dreaded' call.

As is my custom this time of year, I have been reflecting upon the year that was 2005, and have come to a suprising conclusion:

2005 sucked. Big time.

This year has been a seemingly endless string of bad news. With the exception of the miraculous recovery of a friend who almost died in Feb. of 2005, the rest of the year was one awful event after another. Layoffs, deaths, surgeries, property loss, repair bills....You name something bad and it either happened in my family or to other people close to me. About once a week in 2005 I could be caught remarking to myself: "I really need to take up drinking..."

Even for the world in general it seems to have been a mighty sucky year.

Tsunamis, hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, terrorism....The rest of the planet doesn't seem to have fared much better, indeed upon seeing what others have gone through, 2005 could have been a heck of a lot worse for me personally.

If 2005 has kicked you in the face as well, then join with me in giving 2005 a well deserved and unceremonious heave into the garbage dump of history, and lets all pray that 2006 is a hell of a lot better for everyone.

If 2005 sucked for you too, tell us why.

Well let’s see....

My older brother was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. He was out of work for over 6 months so far. I had to help him meet bills.

Blew right knee out had to have surgery on it. Out of work over a month.

Found I had a herniated disc L4. Had to have out Patient Nerve blocks.

Had to cash in my 401K to meet bills.

Real good year....

Well I'm not on trial or anything. Police really had nothing to say about it. It's more like a "if i had just done So-and-so i could have stopped it" or "if i had been there".... The brother also decided to blame me as well. But more likely it was a way to keep me from coming to the funeral. I did'nt get along with her family.

Ran headlong into a shitty job at a shitty company (truckdriving at Swift Transportation).
Mom nearly lost the house with my stepdad's inability to hold a job.  I think he may finally have a decent shot at the one he has now.
Mom had 2 dogs run away, and we fear they are both dead.
I wrecked my Benz, and am having to pay for the damage out of pocket.  I will not be able to move out of my dad's house until after March, at the earliest now.
Grandpa found out that his cancer is back, but they think its treatable again.
Several other piddly-shit situations that generally make for a miserable time.

At least I got a decent job out of the year.  I drive a bus at a university making just slightly less than I did at Swift, with the added benifit that I go home every night.

Fuck 2005.

This thread seems to have a lot of posts about 'what happened to me in 2005', and not very many posts about 'what happened to the world in 2005'. So, to focus a little bit on the latter:

1. In 2005, America was the target of exactly zero major terrorist attacks.
2. In 2005, GWB appointed John R. Bolton - one of the most staunchly pro-2nd advocates ever - as America's ambassador at the United Nations.
3. In 2005, the people of Iraq voted several times - in overwhelming numbers - in favor of democracy, in spite of persistent threats of death at the hands of insurgents.
4. In 2005, carrying a firearm became legal in more states, and more states adopted reciprocal-carry agreements with their neighbors.
5. In 2005, the Kyoto Protocol was formally declared dead, thanks in no small part to America's refusal to sign into it.
6. In 2005, GWB was successful in appointing a brilliant, unabashedly conservative Chief Justice to the Supreme Court.
7. In 2005, GWB nominated another conservative for a second Supreme Court position: "Machine Gun" Samuel Alito.
8. In 2005, Cindy Sheehan's heavily-publicized anti-war movement officially became irrelevant.
9. In 2005, the prospect of convicting Karl Rove and other top-level Bush administration members - every Democrat's wet dream - vanished, as countless hours of investigations and media hype only resulted in the tenuous indictment of a low-level functionary who goes by the name of "Scooter".
10. In 2005, Brazil overwhelming rejected a national referendum that would have banned most firearms and ammunition - a measure that was widely viewed as a model for gun confiscation in other nations - in spite of well-financed efforts by Brazilian media and the United Nations.

BOTTOM LINE: 2005 may have been a bad year for habitual victims, but it was a good year for freedom.

My estimation of 2005 is based more on what happened to myself personally and to people I know than anything else. From Katrina to the Tsunami to freak car accidents to people just dropping dead, lots of folks I know were personally impacted by a lot of nasty stuff this year. It was a miserable year for most everyone I know.

I have spent more time in the hospital this past year than the rest of the years of my life put together. Has not been fun.

It is probably also why I have had the urge to curl up and go to sleep for a few months. All this nonsense happening is draining.

Let's see:  You and I are still breathing, not in a concentration camp nor dying from starvation or  disease; we are still free to post our thoughts on this board, no matter how rebelious they may seem; you are still free to spread the gospel without fear of physical persecution.

I don't know, but sounds like you are a bit focused on the negative.  Buck up little camper.

So far in 2005, I got a new job that pays several times more then I have ever made before, and been doing well at it. Bought a house, truck, and some more guns.

My Dad got divorced again, but I never knew this wife all that well. He seems to be getting through it reasonably well. He bought himself a nice new house near the beach.

My Grandmother also died, but she was kinda estranged from the family. This might actually bring my immediate family closer to some of my other relatives.

So, nothing much to complain about.
