I posted this in the photography forum, but I thought I post it here too because this is pretty cool (IMO)

This is Cabo Girão on the Portuguese island of Madeira (yes, related to the wine)

This is a shot I took....590 meters straight down.

Here's the wikipedia article on it: link

This is actually the 2nd highest sheer sea cliff in the world....the highest is Enniberg on the Faroe Islands....750 meters

+1

So.... If you were shooting straight down at that distance, where would you "hold"?
Link Posted: 12/31/2005 7:21:41 AM EDT
No base jumping....they have a guard. The fence is a really low and really rusty wrought iron thing.

I actually put on a harness and belayed out for this shot. I was a little disappointed b/c the only climbing guide on the island wouldn't go out in AM when the light was right.

Now that's a scrotum-sucking view!

Link Posted: 12/31/2005 7:34:48 AM EDT
So how many feet is that?
Link Posted: 12/31/2005 7:35:35 AM EDT
Cool pix.

Almost looks like the side of whatever used to be there slid off into the sea... (if so) bet that caused a big wave somewhere...

I bet alot of people kill themselves jumping off of there, but they don't publicize it.

I see fields down there- that must be a dangerous place to live. I imagine tumbling rocks are common and dangerous.

1,936 feet.

2,000 feet seems to be smaller than what El Capitan in Yosemite Natonal Park measures out to. What makes that cliff special?

What's the #1 highest cliff face in the world? Nice pic BTW.

Whoa!
My head almost hit my computer monitor right now!

I think the thing that makes this one bigger than others is the fact that it's truely sheer.....ie if you jump from the top you won't hit anything until it flattens out.....it's an uninterrupted verical drop.

The cliffs at Molokai, for example, might be "taller" but they're not totally vertical....you'd bounce a few times if you jumped.

loogy launch!

The climbing guide said that someone had jumped just a few weeks earlier...a suicide...not a base jump.

I've been to the Kalaupapa cliffs, and I can tell you for certain that they're not sheer like these.

Here's Kalaupapa: (not my pic)

I wanna just looking at it.
Link Posted: 12/31/2005 10:18:25 AM EDT
On the other hand, some movie location scout ought to check this out for the openning sequence in a remake of CS Lewis' The Silver Chair.... this kind of sheer cliff over water maddness would do the trick without CG,

My hands just started sweating looking at it...

In Ireland a couple years back, I "crawled" out to the edge of the Cliffs of Mooher (?) and took a similar shot. That was bad enough till I slithered back and walked way around the "U"-shaped edge. Only then did I realize that the edge I had been on was undercut about 40 feet. #%*#@*!!
I NEEDED a couple of Jameson's after that. Stay safe

Cliffs of Moher

That would make me a little queasy...
Link Posted: 12/31/2005 2:55:50 PM EDT
if you lokk close to the top and left you can see that large shark
Link Posted: 12/31/2005 2:58:50 PM EDT
so did you spit down it?

I love heights.

So I take it you didn't dance a jig while dangling out there like that?
