And the choices are:

B-17

B-24

Lancaster

Mosquito

Officially I vote for the B24 cause my grandfather flew top turret but I think those Lancasters were just cool. Must be all the "World At War" footage I grew up watching.

B-17, followed closely by the B-25 and the B-26.

Where's the B-29 and B-26
Link Posted: 12/29/2005 6:50:18 PM EDT
The Queen, B17, followed very closely by the Mosquito.
Link Posted: 12/29/2005 6:50:29 PM EDT
I'd go with the Mosquito... though it was more of a fighter/bomber or attack aircraft than a bomber.

Actually, I think most of the Allied bombers were all quite beautiful. You do need to include the B-25 Mitchell and B-26 Marauder to be fair! Oh, and the B-29, I guess...

Mosquito followed by the B-26! I love those Marauders!
Link Posted: 12/29/2005 6:56:29 PM EDT
I voted Mosquito, but it's hardly in the same class as the B-24, B-17 and Lancaster. The latter 3 are heavy four-engined bombers and the 'skeeter is a fast, light bomber. Among the heavies, the B-17 is the best looking.

Me262...Yes, it was a fighter, but Hitler thought it was a bomber...

I voted the B-17

It was designed in an era when aircraft were very sleek and beautifull.

Stan Stokes has a print of a couple a B-17's pictured head on and in all their unpainted, aluminum glory...they just look really awsome from that angle, very attractive aircraft...almost a work of artfull design, kinda like the Spitfire.

The B-24 and Langcasters were probably more capable aircraft, but look like a trucks by comparison IMO.

The B-26 is another plane that's very sleek and looks fast standing still.

I've also always thought the Heinkel He 111 with it's glased nose was very good looking.

Roger that on both counts.

B-25 Mitchell, whats with making polls that dont include the best aircraft?

Yes, which is one of the myriad reasons why it was too little, too late for the Krauts. I'd vote for the Arado Ar.234B, personally.

Ar.234 Blitz

The Horten Bomber, real thing reportedly flew at least once cannot find pic of the actual prototype.

Here is what is left of the fighter version. Fucking tragedy.

Interesting info on HO 229 fighter, yes it flew.

B-17 is just damn beautiful.

All those gun turrets give me wood.

Get out of my head!!!

I haven't seen the pictures you're talking about, but I agree with what you said about the planes.

Heinkel 111. I've always been fascinated by that plane.

Of the choices listed, B-17. It's the first thing that pops into most peoples heads when you say "WWII Bomber". Truthfully, the B-29 was a lot more appealing.

The poor bastards in the B-17 are not having a good day.

The inboard port engine is down and the prop is feathered.

Must be a combat photo.

I'm going to have to go with something German, they made everything look sweetass.

This poll is lame.

Of the lot, I went with the Lanc. I don't think the sample pic was particularly showing the best view!

B-25 would definitely have been up there though.

Does the black widow count as a bomber? Because if it does that one.

Nope. Night fighter.

Northrop P-61 Black Widow.

Badass.

B-17. I like B-24s, but they are ugly.

B-17.

There's no angle in which it looks anything other than beautiful.

BS! My Grandfather flew Black Widows and they bombed, it gets my vote :)

Link Posted: 12/30/2005 2:41:27 AM EDT
I just wish the black ' copters quit flying around my house.

All the brain waves and too little tinfoil,

I vote Lancasters.

I was in a B-17 at the Edwards air show recently. If you have never been in one, you would be shocked at how small those things are. It felt like a Piper Cub inside. It gives you a new appreciation for the pair of gonads it took to fly them into Europe.

Finally a vote for Lancasters, my sentimental favorite... I had an uncle on one as a flight engineer (RCAF).

B-17 = Beautiful airplane
B-24 = Ugly
Lancaster = Not as ugly as the B-24
Mosquito = Wow what a beautiful airplane. Made of plywood because aluminum as rationed. Fastest bomber of the war. It just looks wonderful.

Disclaimer: This is not a fair contest because you've mixed 2 and 4 engine planes.

B-17 got all the press, but tha B-24 flew higher, faster, with greater payload and were in greater numbers. Flying in european and pasific theaters it was adapted for multiple duties from carting payloads of people or fuel to doing submaline patrol. Besides, the flat sided "flying box-car" was a perfict canvas for some terrific nose art! My father-in-law was a tail gunner flying out of N. aferica & Italy, credited with 3 confirmed kills & 1 probable...fley 50 missions! in B-24-J, "Our Hobby II".
