Looking at a 1880 Colt Frontier tomorrow, price of 1K she also has a 1877 Lightning in excellent condition for 2500. Only going to get one. [all I can afford] Lightning is in 38LC, frontier is in .45 Colt. Leaning toward the Frontier myself as the 1877 has a reputation as being fragile, and I don't have any 38Colt ammo. So, whats the better buy? 1877 is in better shape with more finish but the Frontier seems to be more collectable. I think the Frontier is the better deal.

Thanks for the info, Anyone else with any knowledge of old Colt SAAs. I am more of a 1911 guy and own just a few SAAs. I'm just referring to my books for info about them. I do know who owned it before she did [he passed away] and he was pretty well known around here as a Colt collector. She has a excellent Camp Perry .22 single shot  revolver that is quite cool. I've handled that one. Very different.

I believe that if it is in .45 LC then it is technically a "Peacemaker," and that the "Frontiers" were in .44-40.

Yep, I just talked with her and she said she had thought it was 45Colt but that the BBL is way small. So It could well be 44-40.  I just checked and 44-40 was the only caliber the Frontier came in.
